Soft AC & Standards in NEPA

While driving through the area this weekend, I discovered a couple of excellent stations in the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton area of Northeast Pennsylvania: Soft AC station "EZ 103" (103.1 WFEZ Avoca, PA), and Adult Standards simulcast 730 WNAK & 94.3 WNAK-FM (licensed to Nanticoke and Carbondale, PA, respectively).

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.ez103fm.com/>"EZ 103"</a> impressed me with the quality of their music, including a song which I have never heard before: the Beach Boys' 1996 remake of their hit "Don't Worry Baby", with female country singer Lorrie Morgan singing lead vocals. At first I thought it was Jo Dee Messina singing, because Lorrie is so rarely heard on non-country stations (except her version of "My Favorite Things" which gets played as a Christmas song).

Meanwhile, WNAK caught my ear because it was actually the first time I have ever heard an Adult Standards format on FM. I've heard Beautiful Music stations on FM before, but never Standards.

There was a country music salutes the Beach Boys compilation availiable several years ago and that that's where it's from.

A couple of other EZ country songs that would work great on that kind of format include "An Oldfashioned Walk" with LeAnn Womack singing with Ray Benson's Asleep at the Wheel. There was also a CD "Rhythm Country and Blues" which paired R&B artists with country singers. "I Go To Pieces" with Arron Neville (sorry, don't recall the female singer's name at 3 AM).

It was Aaron Neville & Trisha Yearwood who covered Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces" in 1994. Also on that CD was a Country-ish version of "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing", as sung by Gladys Knight and Vince Gill.

Later in 1996, Aaron teamed up with Anne Murray to do a country song called "That's What My Love Is For", but I'm not sure if that was a cover version or original song. Also by himself, Aaron covered George Jones' song "The Grand Tour" in 1993 and managed to gain some airplay on Country stations with it.

I travel through the area for work and WNAK is the best Adult Standards music station I have heard. If they would move it to New York City it would be #1 in 5 minutes! They announced their up for some award for the station's programming
