Sohio Weather Sounder

It was Boron in Pittsburgh, but the sounder and the catchphrases were the same, just substituting Boron for Sohio in the ad...Boron with Iceguard...you go or Boron pays the tow.

Those Boron signs were cool. I only remember seeing one Boron sign that "spun", it was at a former Gulf outlet in East Liberty.

Based on the comments from the Cincinnati page, it looks like this sounder made it to Lexington, when Sohio bought the southern Gulf stations, and on CKLW in the Detroit area.

Based on what it says on the YouTube page, I guess it even has a title. It's called "Sohio Snowbound".

Somebody's gotta have this somewhere!

I have it somewhere. I am on the road this weekend. When I get home on Monday I'll try to find it and upload it for you.

That really brings back the memories....although most of them with it being cold, snowy, dark and I was delivering the Morning Tribune Review. :D

I agree. I miss Sohio and Boron. The station buildings were also cool.

Here are some pictures,

Here is a station in Mercer, PA:

Yikes! That did an even better job of blowing out your Vu meters than Minnie Riperton!

Here it is... The Boron / Sohio Temperature Sounder....

THANK YOU! THANK YOU, AGAIN!

I am going to quibble a little with your "copy" ... here's how it read around here:

"Sohio Temperature Forecast. Tonight's low .... Degrees. So fill up now with Boron or Cetron with Double Ice Guard Protection. No fuel line freeze-up or Sohio pays your tow."

Of course, in my 30+ years of driving, I can't ever remember a time when my fuel line froze up, but I'm sure it was a big fear back in those days. Kind of like those 1960's Shell commercials touting the higher mileage you receive with Shell gasoline because it contains "platformate", versus gasoline without platformate. Of course, they never told you ALL gasoline brands contained platformate, but it still made for a good commercial.

Since you had the Boron/Sohio sounder (aka "Sohio Snowbound"), I have another stumper for you. Remember the "Allegheny Air System" jingle from the late 1960's/early 1970's. "...Allegheny Air System ... We have a lot more going for you!" I've been looking for this commercial for ages!

Be glad your fuel line never froze. I remember waiting for the temperature to rise so my car would run again or towing the car to my friend's service station so that it could warm up in his service bay so that the fuel could flow again.

IIRC, didn't Boron/Sohio use another sounder prior to the one we're familiar with? I remember watching the Boron weather on KDKA-TV in the mid-to-late '60s and hearing a different sounder then a Boron gas ad would come on.
