Allen Shaw's Centennial Broadcasting has agreed to pay $24 million for Univision Radio's rhythmic KKSS (Kiss 97.3), regional Mexican KJFA (La Jefa 105.1) and Spanish adult hits KKRG (Recuerdo 101.3) in Albuquerque, as well as Univision Albuquerque Trust's classic rock KIOT (Coyote 102.5), which is licensed to Los Lunas, N.M.

Univision had placed KIOT in the trust, led by Bob Woodward, in May 2007 per an FCC order to divest one station in Albuquerque.

Kalil & Co. is the exclusive broker of this transaction.
 
Double C...from what you know of the market, is the $24 million dollar price tag a fair-market value for that combo?

Must mean KQBT is a goner.

Great news I would imagine for a weary local group in the fringe market dealing with
beaurocratic corporate structure and trying to do great radio.

Rumor is there's another buyer for KQBT about to be announced, and I'd have to think it's a goner. I can't imagine anyone keeping that format going. I also have to think Recuerdo's in trouble, though I guess Centennial could strike a deal with Univision to keep carrying the format. I suspect the other stations are pretty safe.
 
Funny about KQBT 101.7 as I understand it is a better signal than 101.3. I know when I was on there when it was Kool 102 we use to get some great ratings....Will another group take an FM from here and one from Clear one from Cit and form a new group
 
It will be interesting to see what Centennial decides to do w/the two stations currently broadcasting in Spanish. That's not their niche back in VA. And, Double C, you're right. 101.7 puts out a better signal over the local area vs. 101.3. 101.7 has been the black sheep in the Abq Univision group. They don't even mention it on the website, and we can assume they won't be keeping it for sentimental ties to Abq.
 
Uncledon...is the signal disperancey between 101.3 and 101.7 because 101.7 is still up at the base of the Tram..shooting a stronger signal over the heights, valley, and the west side (Rio Rancho is the city of license I think) than 101.3...who's tower site I thought was out west of 9-mile hill? 101.3's signal is week in Rio Rancho...especially going down the hill into the Bernalillo area...but you can get a strong signal
on I-25 north to Santa Fe before 101.1 (Los Alamos) interference. Wild how the FCC shoe-horned all those frequencies together :)

Anyone have programming predictions for the two Spanish-formats aquired? Are there any format holes in the market? Or perhaps a challenge to a weak format holder?
 
It is not confirmed by anyone I know, but word is that Piolin is staying with La Jefa..through a deal with Univision.
Centennial loves the station. Recuerdo is doubtful howeverThey'll most probably see a format change there. Makes no sense to keep it. It was a lame format for ALbuquerque..never caught fire here. Never did understand the removal of "The Range" in favor of that format. It will be interesting to see the support now for KIOT and KKSS.
Already doing well, with more marketing and promotion, these will be forces , even more than now, in the market.
I have talked to an employee who says it's a very positive buy for Centennial and of course there will be some changes in
personnel. Univision has top heavy management, accounting, risk management etc.

When I was visiting Albuquerque about three years ago, I listened to KAJZ 101.7 for much of the time I was there, and I noticed, on the way to Santa Fe, I lost it pretty much right past Rio Rancho on I-25. I was surprised to find it turning to static so quickly past its city of license. I remember wondering how that station could possibly have put a city grade signal into Rio Rancho. However, checking point-to-point signal contour maps, there's not much difference between the grade A and grade B contours to the north or east. It pretty much looks like you either get it full quieting or not at all in those directions.

As I mentioned before, I think La Jefa will remain regional Mexican. To say Centennial doesn't do Spanish language formats is true. However, they don't have much reason to run such formats in Virginia, do they? I can't imagine they wouldn't at least consider keeping a successful regional Mexican station around in Albuquerque. Centennial isn't known for being a company that comes into a market and makes format changes solely to make changes. I'm not sure what they'll do with 101.3. I tend to think it will change since Recuerdo is at least partially networked out of Univision, and it hasn't been a stellar performer. I agree with Radio Pro in that I never could see why Univision ditched The Range for that format either.
 
does anybody remember what HBC (Univision) paid for those stations? I'm curious to see whose bank got the checks and who got caught with the hot potato that is the Simons / HBC / Univision cluster of also-rans.

HBC paid $22.5 million for Simmons New Mexico's FM stations.

Right now, the cluster has 3 of the top 10 12+ (The A's have never been good for anything) and 3 of the top 10 25-54. That is hardly an also-ran situation.
 
Back in the 90's when I worked at 101.7 we hit #2 25-54 3 times, so as with anything
I know a good format on 101.7 will do well. I agree that only 101.3 will change, KIOT & Kiss Bring in some nice mooooola as does or will KJFA.
 
KSFR 101.1 and KKRG 101.3 struggle with each other down the 528 corridor. I too can see the Recuerdo format saying adios on 101.3; there's still 1450 AM carrying a similar format with José for any die hards. So, the open bid is what will Centennial do with 101.3 and no idea yet who else is in line to pick up 101.7 from the Uni-cluster.
