Solid Gold Juke Box with Rick McCaffrey Ends

I heard a promo last night on 1450 WKIP from Rick McCaffrey ,saying “that after more than 30 years on the air the Solid Gold Juke Box with Rick McCaffrey is going off the air, the final show will be this Saturday October 31”. He said he will be playing some Halloween tunes , but much of his last show will be spent reminiscing over the music he played over the past 30 plus years . Of course he gave no hint if his leaving is voluntary , or if he was forced out by Clear Channel’s constant cutting , trying to stay ahead of it’s creditors. An argument could be made either way . Over 30 years is a long time to be doing anything , albeit on different stations , and he is not young anymore . I also heard he was back doing some adult ed teaching. On the other hand , as noted in another thread Clear Channel has been firing people right and left , cutting expenses right into the bone .Furthermore for the past few years he has been stuck on a low power AM station , on which, especially this time of year has a very limited reach for most or all of his show. Also Solid Gold Juke Box does not fit with a talk stations format .In any event nobody in this area has a greater knowledge of oldies music , and he will be missed . I wish him well.

That was very sad news for the people at WKIP, one the weaker AM stations in the Hudson Valley, but I wasn't able to pick up the signal at nigh. To hear that IBOC garbage. WKIP had a weaker signal at night. I always do Rick McCaffery so much, but I have several airchecks from the Solid Gold Jukebox when it was on WBPM formerly "Cool 92.9" from around 2006 except the "Doo-Wop Cruise". I missed that show very much, he was way better than Don K Reed. He is still doing traffic reports in mornings until his departure.

I used to listened to that show when he was on WCZX when it was an oldies station at 97.7. He was at WCZX at the time when the show was on every Friday night for many years when it was "97.7 CZX", and then "Oldies 97.7", "Oldies 97.7/97.3" and then "Oldies 97" until 2002 when it was "Mix 97". And then he came back in 2003 when he was on WBPM former "Cool 94.3" after Cumulus took over from Clear Channel back in 2002 until it went to country. He went back in 2004 when it was on "Cool 92.9" for 3 years until ended up at WKIP until the very end. I'm very, very sad to see Rick McCaffery go from WKIP after 30 years of hosting his oldies show. Good luck to him!

But thank goodness for Sirius/XM satelitte radio, and 95.7 "True Oldies Channel". I hope by maybe this weekend, if there is a stream available for the last day of the "Solid Gold Jukebox", or if not, I would try AMand recording it because of this IBOC mess, all that I'm going to hear is nothing but Interfering the other ststions, this is crazy!

As I would say, good luck!

Yes, Once Rick was relegated to wkip that was pretty much the end, as you couldn't get 'kip next door on low power. Knowledgeable, friendly and conciencious, it's a great loss to the hudson valley, He truly enjoyed what he did and was passionate with this trade. One can only hope that someone eventually picks up the oldies format here in po-town. did hear rick on wrwd this am doing traffic. Job well done, our friend!!!
