Solid Rock 92.7 Starview

Very cool, I miss that LOCALLY OWNED rocker. That station had alot of peronality that is VERY hard to find now. They simply ROCKED with alot of cool air staff that made the station great to listen to. Shame on Hall for making 92.7 a joke now. Get ready for another flip soon like in Philly's smooth jazz station.

Someone actually remembered I worked there!!

Nice page!

Thanx for the positive feedback, parg. SR927S was a good time.

Shame on Hall for making 92.7 a joke now.

Well, it's a class-A station in a crowded, 3-metro area, so formatting is
somewhat limited. It's one of the reasons the former owner sold WHTF.
Another is that Starview Media was unable to acquire another local FM
to form an FM duopoly in York.

I worked for Hall during the first six months of 92.7 The Eagle, and the staff
was pretty cool to to me, and probably to Jim, Dave, Carol, Dave and Steve.

Loved the studios, made new friends, more money, enjoyed discussing radio
junk with the engineer, etc., but the signal processing had been un-pumped
and the format was boring.

I loved Starview. It was a staple for rockers like me in high school in Schuylkill County. Took alot of fiddling with the dial to lock it in, since digital tuners were not readily available.

Cool...

Oh yeah, I had all-in-one stereos, boomboxes, and a Technics receiver with analog tuning.
Today, a budget clock-radio. BTW, it's 4:55 PM.

What is wrong with the web page??
If you click on your link, you don't see the starview station.
I removed the page because the project is on hold, and still a work in progress.
Thanx for the interest.

Are we ever going to see the old station again???

I just discovered this website tonight. I grew up in the Lancaster area and was a huge Starview 92 fan when I found it in the 1970s (WRHY?). It was awesome until it went big band. When it came back as WHTF and top 40, it was a start. I couldn't believe when they started bringing in the "Starview" name again and finally became Starview 92 again. I really enjoyed your website and listing the personalities. When it was WHTF, there was a morning DJ who was obviously Polish, but can't remember his name now. There was also a personality who was on when it transformed back to Starview and his name was Tim Drager. As I recall, he was on vacation and died suddenly.

I've been away from Lancaster Co. for over 10 years now, and presently in Pittsburgh. Arrived here via San Jose in 1999. Since we still have family back in EPA, I still tune into local radio to see whats going on. Looks like a lot of changes have been taking place. Thankfully I can take Q-106 errr The X.

Please come back Starview 92!

Welcome aboard, Scott.

Yeah, WRHY, spinning Progressive Rock. Most of the vinyl remained in the building
up on the mountain, some used for production purposes.

It was awesome until it went big band. When it came back as WHTF and top
40, it was a start. I couldn't believe when they started bringing in the "Starview" name again and finally became Starview 92 again.

That was the era of "92 Rock" (1983 and 1984). Later on, "Starview 92," and then
"Starview 92.7," and finally, "Solid Rock 92.7 Starview. "

I really enjoyed your website and listing the personalities.

Thanx (it needs more data, scans, audio, and a re-design). Those jox were the
air staff between 1993 and 1996. Some worked there during the '80s, like Dave
Powers, Carol Seidel, and Uncle Igor.

When it was WHTF, there was a morning DJ who was obviously Polish, but can't remember his name now.

Probably Mike Ondayko. He moved on to Baltimore's WIYY for several years,
and will soon work for WHFS.

The WHTF calls were assigned to 92.7 from '83 to '96. Initially, they were the
closest available to represent "The Hit FM."

There was also a personality who was on when it transformed back to Starview and his name was Tim Drager. As I recall, he was on vacation and died suddenly.

Tim Drayer. Legend has it that Tim's ashes were spread up on Rock Mountain.
There's a scholarship in his name at York College.

Please come back Starview 92!

Actually, some of the "Starview 92" announcers have posted on the C-PA board,
along with one or two from "92 Rock."

When it was WHTF, there was a morning DJ who was obviously Polish, but can't remember his name now.

I remember his name now, it was Michael Sarzinski. He was there when 92 Rock first came on.

Thank you for the history of Starview, I appreciate it a lot.

OH, alright. Hopefully, I can borrow 92 Rock pix that were floating around
the station during the last weeks of Starview.

Thank you for the history of Starview, I appreciate it a lot.

Cool. There are others who know more than I. Just for KIX :D, let's review
the formats and slogans of 92.7 FM...

Progressive Rock = Starview 92
-------
Beautiful Music = ?
-------
CHR (CHR/AOR-Hybrid) = 92 Rock
AOR = Starview 92 / Starview 92.7
Classic Rock = Starview 92.7
AOR = Starview 92.7
Active Rock = Solid Rock 92.7 Starview
-------
Classic Rock = 92.7 The Eagle
Oldies = Big 92.7
Smooth Jazz = Smooth Jazz 92.7

The tower being on Starview mountain is really a misnomer. The station is licensed to Starview, which really is a small area up Route 24 where the North Sherman Street Extention and Codorus Furnace Road meet. Starview has a couple of churches, a closed barber shop, some houses and a mobile home park. It is part of East Manchester Township and really has no boundaries. The FCC would most likely not even license a station to this area today. It has no zip code or legal boundaries. When the FCC required stations to have their main studio in the city of license, the station had a studio in the mobile home park as old stories say. The tower is really about 6 miles west-northwest of the Starview area on Copenhaffer Road, west of I-83. When the FCC relaxed the rules to allow stations to have their main studio in the city grade contour, the offices and studios were moved to the Copenhaffer Road site by the tower. The original tower was replaced by a 499' new tower a couple of years ago. It was called Starview mountain by the staff. Later in some formats they called it Rock Mountain.

When I worked there, I noticed that the front door wouldn't lock. But that's OK... Someone would hear me scream if there was a problem...... Right?

LOL.....well, when I lived out your way, I used to go past the area of the tower when we'd go fishing at the Bruenner Island coal fired generator plant. I remember the water being 70 deg. in December! Don't know if I could ever find my way back there anymore since its been so long.

Thanks for the history of the tower and studio, that I did not know.

I don't live in EPA anymore, so forgive me. They're now playing smooth jazz now?

Sure, since February 2004. WHTF was sold to Hall Communications during 1995
and everything was finalized in January 1996; our last day on the mountain was
1/19/96, the day the Blizzard of '96 snow began to melt and flood. At 5pm that
Friday, Solid Rock 92.7 Starview became 92.7 The Eagle (Classic Rock).

Six of us were hired for the air staff, along with an account exec. from Starview.
The new, digital studio was over with WROZ and WLPA.

Here are some Eagle pix from January '96... http://four.fsphost.com/927TheEagle/

Our GM moved to WQXA, which spun Alternative/Modern Rock as 1057 The Edge.
Some folks felt betrayed about a newspaper ad for The Edge, which pretty much
begged former Starview listeners to listen to The Edge, since we played much of
the same new music. Hall wanted to keep 92.7's older Rock audience, TeleMedia
wanted 92.7's new Rock audience...

THEN, in February '96, WQXA picked up The Howard Stern Show. Oddly enough,
one morning, Howard drifts into a story about how he was visiting his sister who,
IIRC, lived in Carlisle, and while visiting from New York, he had an interview for a
job at "Starview 92." He wondered if the radio station was still around, and this
was about one month after "Starview" was gone!

WEGK (92.7 The Eagle) blew through some morning shows, including ol' Don Imus.
IIRC, Randy "Rock" Johnson was The Eagle's last morning jock.

1057 The Edge lasted from May '95 through September '97. WQXA became 1057
The X, with an Active Rock format and Jen Shade from WTPA.

Back to 92.7 The Eagle... that format lasted from January '96 through Xxxxx 2001.
Scooter Fortney and John-Summers worked for the next format, BIG 92.7 (Oldies).
