Solomon Brothers Endorsement on WGKA

Solomon Brothers has apparently had success with its long-running radio endorsement campaign. They've of course had market heavyweights, including Boortz and Bert, doing endorsements.

Now (national Salem talk host and former Secretary of Education) Bill Bennett is doing a Solomon Brothers endorsement that airs on WGKA. Bennett says that whenever he's in Atlanta, he visits Solomon Brothers and buys a gift for his wife.

The standard practice is that radio salespeople are instructed to listen to competing stations to see who's advertising. Then the station goes after advertisers who are not currently on their air. WGKA probably went to Solomon Brothers and said, "We can get you Bill Bennett."

But does Bennett endorsing Solomon Brothers sound credible? It doesn't to me.

Because Bill Bennett is endorsing them...I will refuse to shop there (of course...I am not in the market for jewelry yet).

Because I am one cynical SOB, no one endorsing anything on the radio sounds credible. Particularly boortz.

I doubt very seriously any of these endorsers would be buying the product they're hawking if they weren't receiving some sort of gratuity to do so.

Gold!!! Everyone's hawking gold. Most of these people are pretty bright and I'd bet none of their personal financial advisors suggest they buy gold. I've yet to find a financial advisor that thinks gold is a good investment for good ol' Joe Blow.

Just keep this in mind: When someone who purports to be an investment expert is telling you to buy gold from them, it really means that they are SELLING gold. If it was such a good investment, they would be hanging onto it. They don't call it the "greater fool theory" for nothing.

Not a lick different that someone calling a mortgage "the biggest no-brainer in the history of earth", a $99 brake job a good deal, or saying that because our diamond sellers pay their own way from Antwerp to ATL that somehow those expenses don't wind up in the price of the product.

That's not to say that there isn't room for gold in your portfolio in certain amounts at certain times, but go to The Motley Fool if you want to talk about that.

I am disgusted at the number of endorsements out there now. We're running out of people available TO endorse products and now we're hearing producers of shows and programmers and people the average joe couldn't possibly care less about.

What really makes me burn are all the endorsements for Direct Buy. If you Google them you'll find literally tens of thousands of complaints against this company along with a number of class-actions suits. I e-mailed a couple of the prominent national talk-show hosts who endorse Direct Buy telling them what an utterly horrible rip-off reputation the company has and asked that they rethink their endorsement as it really affected my opinion and perception of the endorser. Only one bothered to respond with what appeared to be a fairly generic boilerplate "Thanks for writing..." e-mail stating she'd found Direct Buy to be a great place to shop, yadda yadda.

Can't wait til that company goes out of business.
