SOLUTION FOR LACK OF A SOLID TOP 40/CHR IN ATLANTA.....???

Since Atlanta STILL seems to be lacking a good, SOLID Top 40/CHR station and it’s a well-established, urban-friendly market, why is it that CLEAR CHANNEL hasn’t landed one of their hard-hitting CHR stations here?? Now, Mind you I’m not the biggest fan of CC because of their taking over of everything with a human voice…BUT, if any of you have ever heard a CC Top-40 station before, you would have to agree that particular style of Top 40 would shake things up and KICK ASS in Atlanta!

Any Thoughts?

OH YEAH……

Here’s another depressing list of songs we’re NOT hearing on “All The Hits-Q100” or “Atlanta’s Hit Music-Star 94”…………..

ATLANTANS are S.O.L. if they like radio and the following songs……

3OH!3 – “Starstrukk”
LMFAO – “I’m In Miami/(Atlanta), Trick” (not even on THE BEAT)
DAVID GUETTA – “Sexy Chick” (not even on THE BEAT)
BEYONCE – “Sweet Dreams”
SEAN KINGSTON – “Face Drop”
CASCADA – “Evacuate The Dance Floor” (not even on THE BEAT)
PITBULL – “Hotel Room Service”
OWL CITY – “FIREFLIES”
MICHAEL FRANTI – “Say Hey”….(just BARELY!) & (not even on THE BEAT)

Peace.

Clear Channel may run decent Top 40s... They seem to run KISS-FM in L.A. pretty well. CC just created a new Kiss-FM in Chattanooga (103.7) although the signal is too weak for the northern burbs to pick it up. It seems more Top 40s are being created across the U.S.

It seems though that the best Top 40s are those that are not managed by the behemoth companies.

Bring back Power 99, Z-93 or the original Q100!!!!!!!!

Clear Channel's CHR/Rhythmic ::WILD 96.7 "Atlanta's Party Station":: was decent even though the signal was a piece of issssh! I don't understand why CC never gave them a chance like they did THE BUZZ and LEGENDS???

Even if CC were to bring a CHR to Atlanta, they'd probably use the Premium Choice that a lot of the stations of various formats use. Several of CC's CHRs use this service--it's pretty much the exact same playlist on each station. Mediabase dumped a few stations from their reporting panel after those stations starting using that service.

If Q100 were still owned by Susquehanna, it'd sound a lot better than what it sounds like under Cumulus. Q was one of the better CHRs out there when Susquehanna had them.

I think there's actually a possibility CC will launch a CHR/Pop station in Atlanta in the near future. After all, Cumulus recently launched I-93 in Dallas to go head to head with heritage and CC-owned 106.1 Kiss FM. I know WUBL's numbers are pretty good, but with PPM cume is also more relevant. A well-programmed CHR at 94.9 right in between Star 94 and 95.5 The Beat would hurt both. CC's CHRs tend to be Rhythmic friendly, and The Beat only plays about 20 currents. It's very vulnerable, especially with its signal, and yet it outcumes both Star and Q.
CBS Radio might also be considering launching a Rhythmic friendly CHR/Pop in Atlanta (look at WZGC's numbers).

Clear Channel/Atlanta's Market Manager, Melissa Forrest, has really taken ownership of The Bull. It's been her baby, and it's not going to change any time soon.

Based on what we've seen in other markets the higher ups at CC might not care about Melissa Forrest's stance on The Bull.

Oh - interesting post to stumble upon because I thought I was the ONLY ONE living on this planet still thinking and caring about this!

How Atlanta has managed to go THIS LONG sounding like this beats me.. but hey, at least now a true rhythmic exists, so Pitbull is finally played there in 2008-2009.

Don't ask me why I was up thinking about this at 3am this morning, but I was thinking if anything, Star*94 should remain as is with the alternative lean top 40 hits, and Q (or someone else) should be the one to use the rhythmic lean / traditional top 40 sound!

95.5 The Beat already seems to be doing well and staying true to their labeled sound as is. Cascada would sound most appropriate on Q100 (along with the new Madonna and Backstreet), but if 95.5 randomly started playing it, I'd be surprised BIG time (but I doubt they'd ever play it, especially if WPOW isn't even on it). The Beat would be better off concentrating on "shots" by LMFAO, "give it all you got" - Lil Jon, "Sexy bitch" - David Guetta ft Akon, and... well Atlanta is not ready for Kaci Battaglia yet.

I have no idea what Z93 was... alternative?? Or did I miss something there? Anyway, the original Q would be quite a good idea! Power 99... as far as I remember... would pretty much turn out to be today what 95.5 The Beat is now.

Anyone want to see my idea of a well done rhythmic radio station, check out WPOW. THEY know how to "rock a party" and play some good stuff!!! If I had to choose, that would be the perfect station I'd want to live near to, minus the slow jams and dedications where a mix show could be!

Well...... let me get back to my ALL 90'S WEEKEND here on KPKX. Thanks to Star*94, I know every song in this (alternative lean) 90's weekend on KPKX and it's actually bringing back memories, although a lot of stuff is missing such as Real McCoy, Fun Factory, Ghost town DJ's, Amber, Planet Soul, Rockell, Corona...etc.

Now that I think of it, Power 99 was the last station I ever REALLY enjoyed, living in Atl. from 1989-1997. It was just that back in those days, I was too young to understand or notice all the things I notice now, so when Power 99 flipped, I had no idea until one day months or even maybe a year later, I realized "wait, something's missing here...".

But I do remember vividly being in the third grade at lunch, talking about Power 99 and how people used to do the "Power 99 is better" "no V-103 is better" and I was a huge Power 99 fan with the Janet, Paula Abdul, Madonna's "express yourself", and "heartbeat, you make me feel so weak" stuff. I can't even remember noticing the day that it flipped or even trying to search for it on my turn dial. I guess when I was younger, I was one of those "I just flip around 'til I catch something I like" people.

After a few years of travel between the east and west coast, I began to realize something wasn't making sense when I could only hear certain songs in one state and not in the other. I started to get desperate one day, searching the dial, which is how I discovered Star*94. I was excited about it and stayed true to it for a few years, but always wondered why so much was always missing from the playlist. I remember not knowing any better, calling their answering machine that they had open for requests, just standing there like a fool reading a long long list of songs I wanted them to play almost on a daily basis after school, thinking one day it may happen! Little did I know back then they probably just erased my messages, didn't care, and probably had no idea what those songs were I was requesting. (Someone somewhere is probably reading, thinking "OH! so THAT'S that stupid kid who used to fill up our request box with dance music requests no one in Atl has ever heard of...")

I got excited for Atlanta when I connected flights in Atl in 2000 and discovered brand new 95.5 The Beat, and then again in 2001 when I came a little bit and discovered Q100, and more so when they introduced Atlanta to a "whole new sound" with Saturday Night Q, which I heard through the net!

Flash forward to now, and all I can say is... well, at least they do now have a rhythmic format once again in Atlanta to make up for what would not have ever been heard there if it wasn't for them, and with Star and Q both in existence, the possibility that one of them could go towards real top 40 always exists....

I say, Atl is still better off now than in the mid 90's with the selection they currently have, despite the fact that some may not be all that they can be. The top 40's may be lacking, but the rhythmic is being rhythmic, so The Beat is pretty much fulfilling their purpose. I think if Q went back to it's original state- 2002-2006 style, Atlanta would pretty much be complete right now. Maybe ClearChannel does have to stop by and drop a top 40 in there and show them how it's done. Wouldn't mind if it was CBS or ClearChannel - SOMEBODY has to eventually do it.... and then Q could just become Rhythmic AC Movin 99.7, or dance lean top 40 Energy 99.7, maybe classic hip hop, jazz, or something else.

Z-93 (they dropped the hyphen when they went classic rock) was pretty much a straight ahead CHR. They didn't play country crossovers, they were light on the emergent AC stuff (they left that to WLTA et al.), and they didn't play the odd AOR hit ("You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC was on Billboard but not Z-93) unless it became really big (e.g., "Another Brick In The Wall Part II" by Pink Floyd, which went all the way to #1).

As I have mentioned before, 94Q was more of a hot AC than CHR.

Power 99 started out playing a substantial slice of AOR along with the CHR, which enabled them to pick up a lot of 96Rock listeners. They also had a deeper playlist than Z-93, but not as the result of adding back a lot of recurrents. I don't recall Power 99 being "rhythmic" per se like The Beat is, although they may have picked a lot of it up out of playing a deeper playlist--plus, remember, MTV was pushing a lot of rhythmic material at the time (late 80s) with their "Club MTV" show. Power 99 later dropped a lot of the AOR, until they started drifting in the alt direction prior to the 99X flip.

There were also 97 FOX and Wide 107, both of which had a lot more recurrents like most smaller-market CHRs did at the time. Wide 107 also tended to be more hot AC than CHR as well.

Why is cume more relevant in a PPM measured world?

"Shots" by LMFAO doesn't get played here in Atlanta. That classic POWER 96 Miami vibe would sound perefect here and im sure the nightclubs would rock too.

Would musical genius Rob Thomas fit in with the Power 96 Miami vibe? Because I can't listen to a "CHR" station that doesn't play King Rob at least once an hour. ;)
