Some changes in the Knoxville area

105.7 WLSQ "The Hog" has changed calls to WIHG

92.7 WBZH and their religious format is now known as "92.7 and 107.3 WIJV"

and the biggest surprise of the week...

930 WSEV has stopped simulcasting WSEV-FM and is now known as "AM 930 Pigeon Forge Radio." So far they are only doing station IDs and stand-up comedy bits.

Given the retirees in the Pigeon Forge area, I have often thought of Adult Standards (or Oldies) being a good format for 930 WSEV...or given the "flavor" of Pigeon Forge I think Classic Country would be a good fit.

930 has a ton of billboards on I-40, too.

That's too bad...usually you get your product together and then invite listeners to sample it!
Sounds like they got it backwards...

I have been thinking the same thing...I noticed the billboards a month ago and flipped over, and all I heard was the simulcast of the FM. Maybe they had to get the billboards up while they were available, though, instead of risking them not being available when they were set with programming. I'm sure billboards on I-40 do not see all that much turnover.

I just hope it's better than those awful Branson tourist info stations in my backyard (KLFJ 1550 and KTRI 95.9)! Those stations are painful to listen to, and I don't consider them to be informative. However, I understand they're making lots of money as the shows are paying for their airtime in advance, and there's really not much else you could do with KLFJ and make money.

For those of us not in the area what is WSEV-AM doing now?

The exact same thing they were doing when I made the original post. They are playing the same 15 or so comedy bits over and over in between recorded segments (such exciting things like "What is Tennessee's state bug?") You could listen for 15 minutes and literally hear the entire format. Still no sponsors at all. I can't imagine any tourists staying tuned for more than 2 minutes to listen to this garbage.

Forgetting about the Citadel 98.7 Oldies Switch this weekend, I have recently thought that 105.5 would do well with an Oldies format, catering to Sevier and Knox. The group that now owns 105.5, AM 930, and 94.1 (Morristown) can't seem to make up their minds as to what the heck they are doing.

If someone in Morristown were wise, they would try to buy back and save 94.1. No one in Morristown listens to 94.1 anymore; if they are even listening to hometown radio at all, they're listening to WCRK.

It's simple really... Well maybe 930 makes no sense, but 105.5 is a perfect mass appeal format for a small town. 94.1 is currently LMA'd to a religious group. Otherwise I'm sure it would still be news/talk. The Spanish format on 94.1 was successful, but they had a tough time finding bilingual sales people to sell spots for it.

Why would a resort owner from Missouri want a AM station in Gatlinburg? Playing a loop to come visit his resort on your next vacation? ;D

Also, I found out that in May of this year it was rumored that C.J. Perme filed for bankruptcy and closed his resort. It was just two months after that when he signed with East Tennessee Radio for a LMA with WSEV-AM. He went from being bankrupt to signing LMA's fast.

I guess that also answers my question as to whether or not it will be better than KLFJ 1550. C.J. Perme is also the owner of KLFJ. There's been a lot of activity between him and the FCC lately, too.
