From the Charlotte board and all FCC indications, WLNK 107.9 in Charlotte appears to be flipping to a simulcast of 1110 WBT imminently (with their “Mix” format moving to the current WBT-FM 99.3, and another lower powered station in Charlotte, 100.9 WPZS).

That being said, I can’t help but wonder if 98.9 will be a little butthurt that another FM, also with a blowtorch signal and better programming, from a much bigger neighboring market will be reachable (in Spartanburg and east with a city grade signal) in a lot of their coverage area. I know it’s out of market, and doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things with sales, etc., but it’s just kinda funny to me that 98.9 is going to have a little wind knocked out of their puffed up chest. 101.9 WBAV has a signal similar to 107.9 and has pulled close to a 2 share in GSP.
 
Maybe better in mornings on 107-9 WBT. Tara should be like 9-noon with Frady and Charlie staying in their slots. I commute up I-385 from Laurens County into Greenville for work so it would be nice to have another choice because the HD2 on 98.9 struggles in my home county. I will have to check out the rest of its shows listen to its shows.. I would hope wbt would be better quality because Charlotte is almost a top 20 market and Greenville is about number 58
 
Will they remember to turn on the Stereo Carrier on the 99.3 signal (Currently in Mono)... and I think the HD was turned off as well ... Perhaps 107.9 will switch to Mono Broacasting as well ...

I mention it as we remember when WSPA 98.9 swapped with WYRD at 106.3 ... The Sound quality was terrible after the change for quite awhile, it took at least a few weeks for them to fix it up.
 
This change to 107.9 may provide Vince Coakley a better signal in the Upstate since he was dropped when 106.3 moved to 98.9. Although you can pick up 11.10-AM during the daytime hours.

In recent years, 107.9 from Charlotte has been subject to various levels of interference in Greenville County, and car reception can become spotty depending upon location. I have parked at the Publix on Woodruff Rd, and the HD will lock on. Also on my home radio when I lived off Butler Rd. near Mauldin. I think their transmitting antenna is on the Charlotte side of the tower, so there is a bit of a null in the western fringe despite being omnidirectional. Driving down 385, I get a decent signal from Fountain Inn down to the fringes of Columbia. However, sometimes the atmospheric conditions allow sister Radio One station Hot 107.9 from Atlanta to boom in , overtaking 107.9 from Charlotte. Rumor was they used to be over the power limit down there, but not sure if that is still the case.
 
I doubt this will affect WORDs ratings. (Actual listeners, likely) But anyone who gets a diary for Greenville Spartanburg Anderson likely won't get that signal and Radio One won't promote it locally.

107.9 gets a good signal in Spartanburg County and can be heard in parts of Greenville County and Laurens County. Some WORD listeners who miss Vince Coakley may choose to tune in to WBT, but otherwise the 98.9 hosts may be more relevant to the Upstate.
 
Are there any advertisers in market #54 that want to pay market #20 rates?. I doubt it. If ANY Charlotte station comes in the top 10 in Greenville ratings, I doubt the Charlotte station would have salesperson working Greenville. There would be a large discount from the Charlotte rare card which would undercut the the Charlotte revenue.

107.9 might grab some listeners but they will never hurt any Greenville broadcaster financially.

I never suggested it from a revenue standpoint, I know that’s a moot point. I just think it’s funny how WORD brags and brags about their signal and is overall self serving about their programming and now they have a full-powered class C knocking on the door of their market. I don’t expect it do do anything to the ratings, and certainly not billing loss. I just think it makes the “we have listeners on FM in Rock Hill!” and “you’re calling us all the way from Gastonia?” brags look ridiculous.
