Some daytime catches in SW Michigan

I finally proved to myself that it is possible to hear WSM in the daytime. Picked them up using a Grundig G8 and box loop antenna around 2 pm this afternoon. Very weak and fading in and out, but I heard the ID and music. WHAS was also heard, significantly stronger. Other interesting daytime stuff: 1100 from Cleveland, and 580 from Urbana. Send me any requests and I will try for them.

PS: I don't really like the G8 that much, especially the audio quality (horrible!) but it's the only portable radio I have up here at the moment that has a digital tuner.

WJR 760 is normally received here day and night with a good signal. About the same strength as WLS from Chicago. CKLW 800 is a little weaker than WJR but still Q5 both day and night. No special equipment needed for either of those.

I will check 1130 tomorrow for WDFN. I did tune past 1130 today but I believe I was picking up WISN. They were not very strong. I'll turn the loop toward Detroit and see what I can get.

I have a fairly quiet location on a lake with only one moderately strong Class D signal about 8 miles away.

580 is daytime monster. I pick up that station often in Owensboro Ky. Which is amazing to me.
If Traverse City, that's a heck of a catch.

The major lobe of WTCM's 50 KW is directed about 35 degrees towards the Upper & Ontario, and I recall someone posted that they were granted 50K because the ground conductivity is so low.

Days, I get WILL Urbana here in Cincinnati.

How about WJR, 760 kHz? CKLW, 800 kHz?

WJR used to come in during the day at my location in the near north Chicago suburbs until 750 in Portage, Indiana began sending their signal this way. Can hardly hear WJR now with the splatter.

I probably should have wrote that differently. The monster I meant was WILL during the day.

I have never gotten Traverse City, in Owensboro. That would really be an amazing catch!

I shudder to think how well both WILL-580 and Purdue's WBAA-920 would get out if they had state of the art processing set up properly and cranked to the max. Yes even with their public radio formats.

Both are amazing signals.

Actually I forgot to mention that I also heard WBAA 920 yesterday afternoon. What is hurting WBAA is their IBOC sidebands. I think they would sound a lot stronger without them. I don't understand why they bother to run HD on such a weak signal. They must have no more than 2 or 3 listeners. I can also hear WBAA in the mix at night; sometimes better than others.

OK just checked and WDFN is coming in fine. Just have to null out WISN to get them.

OTOH, what has happened to CFCO 630? This is normally an easy catch in this area. Are they off the air? Their web site has no information.

Picking up something on 570, pretty weak. Any ideas?

WTVN 610 is an easy catch, no special effort required to pick them up.

Interesting catch.

I never imagined there could be AM skywave midday this time of the year but the fading in and out proves it.

570 is likely WKBN from Youngstown, OH

SW Michigan would give Marinette nearly as good a chance as Youngstown, particularly since the path is nearly all over water (even if not salt water). Even at 250 watts, for some reason that one gets out very nicely... I recall frequently hearing it around the area of Traverse City in the 60's on a car radio.

WRFD is not hard to get. Have to position the loop to reduce the signal from WLS.

I don't think I have heard KMOX. I will try again today, but the high dial position works against them.

I'll try to ID the 570 and see if it is Marinette or Youngstown. I have heard a Youngstown ID at night, but not in the daytime.
