Some Familiar Faces Pop Up on CBS19

Was channel surfing tonight and what to my wandering eyes should appear but Bryan Houston alongside Judy Jordan for CBS19 Eyewitness News at 10. Bryan has been doing the morning news for some time now, so that wasn't something that would make me fall off the couch. Seeing Judy incited a reaction that made my wife wonder if I was alright. She's been out of the Tyler TV arena for about 20 or so years, IIRC. It kinda blindsided me to see her back.

Then, Bryan tosses to the weather and who should be there but Scott Fossey.

At one time or another, all three were at KLTV-TV. Bryan jumped ship and went to KETK-TV, Judy dropped off the radar after leaving KLTV and Scott left KLTV to go into full-time ministry (he's a Church of Christ pastor).

Bryan mentions that both Judy and Scott were going to be around "for awhile"...any scoop on whether BH is permanently anchoring on the weekends now, where JJ was before now and what it took to get her back on the set and is SF still pastoring? Inquiring minds want to know....

Yikes, talk about a blast from the past. Judy's heyday at KDFW was over 30 years ago.

How does JJ look now? About the same as with 7? Hope the years have been kind to her. This is a huge surprise...this is just the weekends, right? Has it been 20 years? Ugh, time flies....

I worked part time at the KRLD AM-FM-TV news department in 1967-68, and Judy was doing big things then. As the low man on the totem pole, I always enjoyed being the audio man for some of her reports, or helping in any way I could. She was great to work with. Frequently a guy named Dennis Monson would shoot film (no tape) and help with the stories. They were a good team. Anybody know where Dennis ended up?

Looks as if CBS 19 may be making a move to become a player in the market. Influx of known faces from days gone by would add some punch to the station's on-air news product. Bryan Houston and Judy Jordan far surpass the current anchors, who were good for a startup anchor team, but the combination has proven to be weak and lacking in chemistry--both between the two anchors themselves and with the audience. Yes, it's the Tyler market but that doesn't mean the station has to settle for on-air people who just don't connect with viewers.

No doubt the current anchors are good people and mean well, but logic dictates they be moved to weekends and people the caliber of Judy Jordan and Bryan Houston put in the weeknight slots at the anchor desk.

Yeah, that was extremely strange. I also found out that Stormy the Weatherdog used to host "Mundo" for KLTV, too. Small world.

I watched part of the news on 19 tonight, and a thought suddenly struck me with all three experienced journalists sitting there.

KLTV is a station where when you leave, you're just as likely to get out of the business completely and take another job in town in a different field as you are to move up the ladder and go to another market.

Happened to me.

And just today, Chuck McDonald was spotted doing an ID for 19.....egads....

I dunno.....Kelli Wiese knows the market, having been at KETK and KLTV....I was surprised when she was announced as one of 19's lead anchors.

It would be nice to see Bryan Houston back at the weeknight desk.....but I see that ending up going to 19's other familar face...Chuck McDonald.

First Bryan Houston, then Judy Jordan, and Chuck McDonald....what's next....Bob Gooding...or even better....I'm thinking of some of the big names at Channel 7 back in the early 80s to early 90s.

Or better yet, bring back Kip Kippenbrock!

There's a blast from the past. Haven't thought of him in ages. He was one of the early on air people at Channel 7, in the pioneering days of black-and-white make-do television when the lights were blistering hot so the old inefficient camera tubes could just pick up an image.

In the mid-50's, the station would sign on at about mid-afternoon and dd a live daily potpouri show called "Look Who's Here>" Wasn't Kippinbrock one of the program's hosts? Then there were his almost famous weathercasts using maps and grapics right out of the stone age, but then that's all there was in those days.

Kippinbrock was one of the first weather people to use radar in this area.

Reminds one also of another Channel 7 staple. Grand Dad (Glenn) Rich and the Fowler Playboys. Ah, those were the days.

When I saw her this past weekend on 19, I thought she had looked only a little bit older from her days at 7....

As for the 20 year estimate.....I don't think it was that long.....I'm thinking about 91 or 92 when she left KLTV.

Yes, and there was also a "Hostess" for he show. Can't remember her name. I was actually on that show when I was about 10 or 11. There was only one camera, an RCA TK-11, I think. I remember they would fade (more like wipe) to black using a piece of black cardboard that was slid in front of the lens while they moved the camera from the news set to the weather set.

It was painted some really weird colors that looked OK in black and white. As you say , very stone age, but it was still exciting.

The radar was an old Army (or Signal Corps) surplus unit. The screen was about 7" in diameter. They's focus the camera on the screen so you could watch. I'm surprised that it was bright enough to register on that old camera. I understand the old RCA camera is on display in the current KLTV lobby, although I've never dropped by to see for myself.

They WERE the good old days. I wonder if there is anything left inside the old quanset hut building?

Just rats, mice, and roaches having a field day. But a lot of East Texas television history was made in the old quanset hut studio. Wasn't the location at one time an airfield and several quansets used as hangars and aircraft maintenance buildings?

How outdated am I?
Judy retired after KLTV and moved to California with the family. After her husband died, she returned to Tyler.
