Some FM radio history I researched.

Hey Guys:

I have been doing some research on some FM's and here is what I have done so far. Please let me know if my info is correct. If not Please correct me. Got my info from back broadcasting yearbooks.

1. 105.5, 105.3, 105.7

1960 to 1968 KNIK 105.5 Auto Beautiful Music (Network listed as "GOOD MUSIC")
1968 to 1973 KNIK 105.5 Auto MOR/AC "Hit Parade"
1973 to 1975 KNIK 105.5 Auto AC/Oldies "Solid Gold"
1975 to 1988 KNIK 105.5, 105.3 Beautiful Music (105.5 to 105.3 in 1980)
1988 to Now KNIK 105.3, 105.7 Smooth Jazz ( 105.3 to 105.7 in 2000)

2. 103.9, 104.1

Nov 1966 to 1976 KHAR 103.9 Beautiful Music
1976 to 3/13/92 KKLV 103.9, 104.1 AC, More Hot AC in the 90's Books listed as Adult contemp/ CHR (103.9 to 104.1 I think 1981)
3/13/92 TO NOW KBRJ 104.1 Country

3. 102.1

Here is where I have some blanks:

1. Aug 1966 to 1970 KAMU 102.1 format I think was either classical or beautiful music. (Owned by Stereophonic Alaska Inc from 1966 to 1972 AQ: 8/15/66)
2. 1970 to 1972 KWKO 102.1 format I think was classical.
1972 to Feb 1, 1973 off the air (New licence to Cook Inlet Broadcasting.)
3. Feb 1, 1973 to 10/31/80 KJZZ 102.1 format was Jazz (Real Jazz)
4. 10/31/80 to 9/24/86 KRKN 102.1 AOR I think is was called K-ROCK or Rock 102, not sure. Help?

of course there was KPXR Top 40, KKRO Classic rock the arrow and modern AC KDBZ the buzz.

If anybody can help on 102.1 early days it would be a big help.

Hopes this brings back memories!!

T.J.

BTW..KRKN was called Krackin' 102. Again, we didn't have format names with initials. We were just FM Rock.

Not sure how you have us logging on in 10/80. I left two weeks later and had been playing rock and wearing KRKN 102.1 t-shirts for months. I had been working there almost a year and we changed formats and calls in March. Maybe a licensing quirk. I dunno.

Hi T.J.
I came onboard KRKN FM on Feb 12, 1981 as the morning drive jock. Larry Wayne was the PD, I don't remember what Jay Noble was doing, Amy McLinden was midday, Jim Conors was PM drive, Ron Thorne, Mike Droege, Mike Esfeld were sales guys, Jay Perry was our beloeved, if not tight, General Manager.

I stayed for 2 years and loved every minute of it. The free form format was a winner in Anchorage and we had an extremely loyal following. I ended up getting lured away by Kent Byus at KYAK (Bingham Broadcasting) in mid 1983 but only lasted a year. Went to Bangkok for about 5 years and ran an English language station there and then came back to work at KASH FM in 1989 and Magic 98.9 in 1990.

I believe KRKN became Power 102 for a while and Jay Perry stayed on there in a sales role until he passed away.

I'm still in touch with most of the people listed above. I can pass questions on for you if you like.

cheers,

Morgan Evans

Crackin 102!!! I think their tower was on top of the McKay Bldg on 4th. Great free form station back in the day!!!

Hi, T.J. -

A few corrections with respect to KRKN' (note apostrophe which I insisted upon, and which was filed with the FCC).

As a holdover from KJZZ-FM, I continued my Saturday night 6-12mid. on-air shift, though I was also General Sales Manager.

KRKN' was also know as 102 Rock.

The format was AOR (Album Oriented Rock).

Yes, our tower was on top of the McKay Bldg. at 4th & Denali St.

And, yes, it was a great free-form station, serving two genres, jazz & rock.

I was privileged to be a part of both KJZZ-FM and KRKN'-FM ... until 1982.

Cheers,

Ron Thorne
