Was "Talk Talk" the first ever punk rock single ?

I remember "Go Now" by the Moody Blues. Did Manfred Mann do also ? I know it was originally and R and B song.

Remember "Mr. Bass Man" by Johnny Cymbal? I think it's my oldest radio memory. What year, anyone know ?

Mr Bass Man is from 1963.

Mr. Bass Man - Johnny Cymbal (1963)
Cinnamon - Derek (1968)

Same guy.

Derek was actually the name of Cymbal's younger brother; Cymbal kinda stole it. And Cymbal was his real name too; he was born John Blair but took the name of his mother's second husband, Nikolas Cymbal.

Incidentally, the "bass man" on Mr. Bass Man was Ronnie Bright, who had sung with the Valentines, 1954-57. He also sang on Barry Mann's 1961 hit, Who Put The Bomp In The Bomp-Bomp-Bomp. Bright was a member of the Coasters from 1968 until 2009.

Glenn, I really loved your show on WRSG last night, so much so that we rebroadcast it this evening from 6 until 8 p.m. An excellent show week after week!

If You Gotta go, Go Now - is by Manfred Mann ...similar title to MB's "Go Now" different song..Moody Blues coming to New Mexico in a few weeks..on the heels of a tribute show The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones...pretty cool.- Vince Guillen (aka Meln8tor)

What year does "Twistin' Pneumonia" date from? Not sure that I want to hear that one! That title along suggests that maybe, just maybe, there were too many "Twist" songs back in those days. Talk about jumping on a bandwagon!

LOL...maybe not the greatest song title. "Twistin' Pneumonia" was out in in 1960 on the Warwick label. You should give it a listen, it's a really cool doo-wop record.

The Genies, who were from Brooklyn, had one minor hit, Who's That Knockin', on Shad Records in 1959. They followed it with No More Knockin' on Hollywood Records. (No, not the Disney-owned label---a different one.) They recorded three more singles for Warwick. Twistin' Pneumonia was the B-side of the second of those singles; Just Like The Bluebird was the A-side.

There were two other Genies groups; one recorded for King in 1961 and one (a female group) recorded for Lennox in 1963.

Well unrelated to the above post......but you know that KRTH link I posted with the number one songs? Well, I actually play them every Labor Day Weekend at home to this day. It last aired in 1988 on KRTH, before Beasley Broadcasting took over and changed everything, including much tighter playlists over there.

Crazy Huh? Hey, but it's great music...

Betty & Dupree by Chuck Willis? Come Softly To Me by the Fleetwoods? This Love Of Ours by the Del-Rons? Golly gee! And in a discussion of oldies radio on another thread, one guy continues to insist that today's listeners to oldies (or "classic hits," as they're now known) want to hear only the biggest hits and nothing prior to 1964; he insists they'll change the station if an unfamiliar song comes on. I think he's wrong. We're all excited about Hits Of Yesteryear. We are never excited about hearing Brown Eyed Girl or Oh Pretty Woman for the 50,000th time. Now let's all spread the word about Mister glenn59's site.

I have to say, there was a better sounding version of 'Sick and Tired' back in the day. Chris Kenner of 'I like it like that' and 'Land of a thousand Dances' fame had an recording of 'Sick & Tired' a year earlier than Fats. Although Chriss' version didn't do as well, he did compose all three songs.

Does anyone have a good copy of Johnny, Please Come Home by Darlene Love that they would be willing to forward to me in an MP3? I would love to have that tune and can't find a deceit copy on Youtube

All right...Fred Carter, Jr. and "Not I, Pretty Baby"! The Tremeloes, Brenton Wood, plus songs I've never heard from the Shangri-las, the Belmonts, the Jackson 5, and on and on...can't wait for this show!
