WCBS-FM 5.5 12-PLUS!! First time that I can EVER remember the station's numbers being THAT high (they were 5.0 during the 1990-1991 time period, iirc) - kudos to Brian Thomas and the ENTIRE programming team (and the BEST airstaff - NY or anywhere else - of ANY oldies station!!)

iirc, at its peak, Jack was a 1.5 in ratings...if you were a PD....you do the math on this one....

I wonder whose brilliant idea was it to flip it to Jack. That station would never get ratings so high.

That would be former CBS Radio President, Joel Hollander. Dan Mason had designs on changing 'CBS-FM back to "Classic Hits" from the second he hit the lobby of Black Rock ... for the second time in his career.

A great story for the Classic Hits / Oldies fans on New York.

But beware ... the strength of the PPM numbers is different than the old "Jack" methodology and just how deep were the "saleable" demos? The 6+ numbers, though impressive, are still "beauty contest numbers" and not reflective of the "buyer's favorite" -- though we know CBS does well there, as opposed to older-skewing "Classic Hits" stations, many of them CBS stations.

Nor would CBS-FM if they were still using the diary system. These numbers are solely due to the onset of PPM methodology. Dan Mason, the President of CBS radio stated many times that the July 07 decision to revert CBS-FM back to classic hits was so that the station could thrive using the PPMs which have proven to be most friendly to classic hits, ac and some types of CHR.

FYI...CBS Radio left Black Rock years ago...if memory serves, it was before the turn of the century. I don't think Dan ever had a permanent office there.

I shall rejoice with you today and not find a single criticism of CBS-FM. NBC on the other hand is kind of tanking in a hurry.

Oh, I'm not so certain, good as the CBS-FM team is. I'd say Jhani Kaye and the team at K-Earth 101 in LA isn't doing so bad for CBS, either.

Hmm. The fallacy is that you can not compare the shares in PPM with the shares in the diary. The two methodologies show very different PURs, making this an apples to oranges comparison

If you go to the base number, the ratings for this last book translate into a 0.6 in 12+. I looked at the period from 2000 to 2003, and CBS FM had a rating that was about 25% higher (0.8) than the current 0.6 rating for 6 AM to Midnight, M-Sun.

So, for 4 whole years at the beginning of this same decade, CBS FM did better than they are doing now. Of course, the 25-54 and the billings were dying....

Don't get too carried away Ms.Wiener. CBS-FM is good but WLS-FM 94.7 in Chicago, is an OLDIES POWERHOUSE. That station has risen as a fierce contender of any oldies station in America. Legendary jocks and Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel make WLS-FM a unique station with ratings to match!

In the three books prior to reverting to gold, Jack was over a 2 share, and averaged a 0.4 rating. In 25-54, it averaged a 3 share and a 0.5 rating.

In fact, the last 3 diary based books through Spring of '08, the rating was also a 0.5 so there was no difference and no gain in the sales demos. And, in 25-54, the ratings in the last half dozen PPM books has been (using simple math on the 10.1 average NY PUR) a 0.4 to a 0.5, and, again, no gain.

Its share and rating in 25-54 have consistently been lower than either KRTH or WCBS-FM.
