Some Lubbock Radio questions

Indeed, it has been a while since anything about Lubbock has been posted, so I thought I'd take a few bytes to ask some questions about Lubbock radio that has puzzled me over the years.

Question 1:
Why are some sport events such as Lady Raider Basketball simulcasts on both AM and FM. Do we realy need them on FM too? I noticed the other night that the L.Raiders were on both KFYO and Kool98. Meanwhile, all the oldies was on Stars104.3 which run an 70's shows on Sat nights. So, why is that? Do the FM's penetrate a certain region that the AM's don't?

Question 2:
I have an RDS display on my car radio on my 2004 Ford. I noticed that it used to read KLLL as "KLLL," and all along, displayed Mix100. Then, recently, I noticed it no longer said KLLL, and instead, it read "Tripple L." Then, more recently (as in a few days ago), Mix100 went off the air one evening, and since it's come back, my RDS displays "Mix 100.3" (even though the station is Mix100 on the air). And KLLL now says, "963, K Tripple L." Why all the changing? Also, how come Z102 still doe not have a display yet, but KFMX has one?
Does anyone know why this is?

Question 3:
Also, what's the deal with having Paul Harvey on an Oldies staton? Isn't he more of a news type of thing? And how come the dj's on Kool98 don't use music beds like other Oldies stations around the country?

Question 4:
What's the deal with the Voice Over guy on 99-5 The Bear? Is this really what is needed to sell spots to advertisers? He doesn't display any energy at all. And exactly what is the difference between "Country" and "Western?"

Question 5:
Why does Z102 not have new jingles yet, and why are they still using the same old ones from 5 years ago, and only using them going out of the weather, or into syndicated programming?

Ok, I know that's a lot, and I hope my questions did not seem to critical or anything. I was just curious about those things, if anyone knows, please feel free to say them here.

I'll try to answer Question 1...yes they penetrate different areas. hth

Probably because the contract to air the games requires it. When I worked for a cluster that held the rights to the Missouri Tigers games, we were required to air certain games on an AM and an FM. In the end, we ended up using two AM's and two FM's because the contract said each signal had to cover both Columbia and Jefferson City. The AM's we had were on local channels, and neither covered both cities. In the beginning, we aired the games on KOOL 106.1, which covered both quite nicely and satisfied the FM requirements of the contract. However, after 106.1 dumped its oldies format for CHR, the games were slid to KBXR 102.3 in Columbia, which did not put a city grade signal into Jefferson City, and KLIK-FM 104.1 Jefferson City, which did not put a city grade signal into Columbia.

As for why the RDS is changing, probably because it's being programmed to. You'd have to ask someone at the station why they keep changing it. Hopefully, they read this board. They're the only ones who will know. As for why Z-102 has no display but KFMX does, that's another one for the company. However, I've worked for companies that have had RDS on some stations but not others, and it's usually been because they either tested it on one station but didn't find the technology useful enough to put on additional stations or they acquired a station that already had it and decided there was no harm keeping it.

Paul Harvey fits just fine on oldies stations. He targets that demo. Unless they've changed strategies recently, ABC has never tried to affiliate his program with just news/talk stations. They used to promote it as the best way to reach the upper end of the 25-54 demo and keep them listening to your station all day long.

In my opinion, Paul Harvey no longer fits on Oldies radio. Nationwide, the format has evolved to more of a "Superhits of the 60s and 70s" format. Outside of Lubbock, you won't hear Buddy Holly on most oldies stations. In fact, most stations no longer use the term "Oldies" because it is commomly associated with the 1950s. For those same reasons, Paul Harvey has been losing affiliates in the past year...he's too old...even for many News/Talk stations. He fits best on a station playing Big Band and/or nostaglia music.

My RDS now reads 96-3 KLLL (used to read Triple-L), Mix 100-3 (used to read Mix 100), and Rock 101.1 (used to read Rock 101)... I believe this is because some consultants stress the importance of the frequency, and some RDS displays cover up the frequency. Z102, Kool 98, & The Bear don't have RDS but FMX does because FMX was the first in the market to have it (and it was before the merger), and perhaps Clear Channel (then Gulfstar) decided the technology wasn't worth implementing on all stations.

Barry Corbin (Northern Exposure, One Tree Hill)is a Lubbock native... that's the deal. The Country/Western thing is a joke... do you really not get it?

That jingle package was implemented in 1998! They would probably drop them completely, but they make better segues out of a pre-recorded (and hard length) spot (even though the spot is a hard length, the spot length may vary within a few tenths of a second).

I figured as much. I kind of do, but just wanted to make sure.
Thanks for your answer, that's exactly what I was looking for!
