Some nice catches from Mexico

I got some decent catches on my car radio from central Mexico, yesterday around 1 AM, local time. My receiver is a Sony X-Plod.

Here they are:

700 - WLW Cincinnati
850 - KOA Denver
870 - WWL New Orleans
1160 - KSL Salt Lake City
1020 - KCKN Roswell, NM
1080 - KRLD Dallas
1130 - WOFC, Muray, Kentucky
1200 - WOAI San Antonio
1700 - KVNS Brownsville,TX

My biggest catches of the night? WOFC. Believe they are 250 watts! And of course the big WLW.

Still trying for Chicago and other midwest stations. Surprisingly, California stations are fairly muted. I'll see if I can use my Select-Antenna some night when my wife is awake.

I must also admit that is refreshing to hear a live jock on some of the Mexican AM stations during the middle of the night. I especially enjoy the chat on 100kw XEB, 1220 AM. The have a Mexican version of a trucking show and often alert listeners of accidents in far away locations, even though they broadcast out of Mexico City. Great nostalgia selections as well from 7-9 PM local time. Very well programmed (at least that segment), especially since it is a government owned facility.

Glad to hear some US stations are still making the trip down there. Last time I was in Mexico (Acapulco) I couldn't get anything because of all the crowded frequencies. However, I used to get WLS & WBBM easily in the 60s & 70s among many others.

A little depressing to hear that major Mexican stations are apparently filling overnights with canned/automated stuff like just about everywhere else.

Those are some good catches when you consider how far south you really are. Like you said, I'm surprised you didn't get any California stations.

From what I remember, KGO prides itself in being able to go well into parts of Canada and Mexico at night. Interesting KFI didn't come in too but then again, I don't know what more local or regional stations you could have on those frequencies.

How sure are you of WOFC? Were they ESPN? WOFC is only 250 watts at night, but also very directional with maybe an effective 1 watt toward you. Even if they were running their daytime non-directional 1500 watts for some reason, I would think they would be covered by closer country KWKH with well over an effective 100,000 watts aimed at you.

I used to pick up KGO quite well in southern Mexico in the 60s & 70s, but with all the clutter on the band now I wasn't able to hear it on my last trip down there in 1997.

As for the question about WOFC, the reception quality was not good. I did hear an ESPN jingle and made out "F-C" in the hash, but only briefly.

Not sure exactly where you are in Central Mexico, but you're probably too far east to pick up any west coast stations. The vast majority of the 50 kw signals from CA are directional and the few that aren't are pretty far away having to travel over and through a lot of mountain ranges to find you.

Even from the west coast of Central America, I've never gotten anything from farther west than KOA (once). Granted, central Mexico is farther northwest than where I was, which helps to get you KSL. That station has an awesome signal, by the way; I picked them up (well) around Edmonton, AB at 2 in the afternoon in early December.

Many people forget that the continent snakes eastward as you travel south into Latin America, meaning that Mexico City is a lot closer to Miami than it is to San Diego or even Dallas. By the time you get to Costa Rica, you're actually straight south of Florida. Given this, the signals from the central Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi valley/Ohio Valley regions are the most likely to get into southern/central Mexico and Central America.

Very good point about KSL. They came in strong into Hawaii when I was recently there.
KSL really gets out.

I don't know the ERPs but KGO concentrates its signal into massive north and south lobes at night, hence why it came in your direction.
1700 is a killer signal here in Houston at night, completely obliterating most anything else that could get here (like the 1700 in Sherman, Texas). I've read reports that it's been heard in Norway. I tried for it in Ohio recently and 1700 was total mush.

KGO could be heard at night south of Mexico City in the 70s. These days with more interference I don't know.
In the midwest 1700 is ESPN sports out of Des Moines. Once in awhile I've heard Miami.
