some observations

Flipping around the dial today I noticed a few things,
1. This has been going on for a while, why does 104.1 not come in as well as KISM and KWPZ in Edmonds? Seems weird.
2. 104.5 sounded better today but seemed to be broadcasting in mono.
3. 3. Seems as if the southern rimshots have been tweaked, KXXO was significantly weaker than it was a couple weeks ago, and KGY has been stronger than usual.
4. Any idea why at certain times KPLZ and some other stations are so staticky in certain spots? The antena of the radio downstairs is taped to the window frame and as far as I know hasn't been moved since the radio was moved a while ago, yet sometimes KPLZ is clear and others it's got a lot of static. Seems to be going through a staticky phase right now.

To answer point 1, anyway. KAFE now has a directional signal after their frequency swap with Shore FM; the other two frequencies mentioned do not. Ever since the swap, KAFE has had a poor signal into S Snohomish county.

KXXO is very weak, almost non-existant in Bellevue the past few days. Used to have a good signal. 104.1 comes in good over by Silver Lake (Everett), but the 500 ft elevation probably helps a bit.

KXXO has a CP to move their transmitter to South Mountain in Olympia. So the Eastside, and also if you live in the Auburn and Kent Valley will have a weaker signal there too. Maybe they are broadcasting from there now. I noticed when I was on 167 in Kent the signal was weak there too.

Kent, the CP I saw was for 65000 watts, and with KOMO-FM coming in clear, I highly doubt it. I thought they switched to a 37 kw site from Capital Peak? That's what I initially thought, but with KGY-FM being so strong I doubt they moved there yet.

Somehow, I picked up CKAV-FM2 106.3 as far south as Marysville today (KBKS and KWPZ usually kills them in Snohomish County) The farthest south they usually come in is Mount Vernon. CKYE 93.1 and CHHR 104.3 also were much stronger than usual too......

It sounds like 2500w, or less to the N at the moment. If they move to S Mountain, and it stays like this, they WILL lose a lot of listeners. KXXO can be heard all the way up to Everett (swapping w/ CHKG), down to Portland, and W to Ocean Shores.

I get CKAV-FM2 in Marysville too. Once with a good radio I got CBCV-FM1 on 99.5 from Metchosin, BC, running 64w! Do you ever get CBCV-FM1 on 99.5 Bongwater?

CBCV-FM1 occasionally breezes in. You really can't get KLCK-FM at all in Bellingham but a muffled sqwak under white noise and CFOX is just weak enough to let it in. But OCCASIONALLY.

I'm REALLY surprised you actually picked it up in Marysville.....For something that's a RARE treat here, that's VERY amazing!

Cheers!

I wasn't in Downtown when I got CBCV-FM1. I was near the intersection of Hwy 9 and 528, at about 300 ft elevation. I even got a very weak KASB 89.9 Bellevue while I was up there, with 60w, but I got it inbetween KMWS and KNWP, two huge signals!

One day before KXXO's construction permit was due to expire, they asked that it be dismissed and applied to move to Capitol Peak. The new facility is for a Class C but barely above a full C0. There were some problems with Canada and they've since amended their application, taking care of these issues.

Ok, that's what I thought, but radio-locator doesn't have that info, they're still saying they will move to South Mountain.

I'm thinking that Radio Locator doesn't post applications. I'm surprised they still show the outdated construction permit.

Radio-Locator, bless their little hearts still, are not the most reliable source of instant up to date radio coverage map information out there.

And they don't even HAVE to be.

It was originally supposed to be a mere listing of available radio stations in any given area. The coverage maps were merely a very nice and overall, fairly accurate typical coverage area of any given radio station. And SUPER HUGE bonus points. Not even FM Fool does it THIS way

But radio wave transmission itself in the end gives the proverbial middle finger to whatever suggested "laws" of transmission, be them from Radio-Locator, absolutely dedicated science. Or the FCC/CRTC (Why is CKBD 600 AM STILL listed on Radio-Locator?).

Ask anybody on Vancouver Island near Courtenay, BC who sometimes picks up KLCK-FM better than CFCP (98.9 Jet FM)

http://www.jetfm.ca/

Likewise, CFCP even overblasts KLCK-FM in parts of NW Washington sometimes. It happens occasionally in Bellingham.

It doesn't matter. Because whether your signal is actually so strong, it actually makes the very best and most selective radio tuners automatically stop on a Seattle station HUNDREDS of miles away from Seattle. Or can barely be heard by a Lenoxx Sound, Walmart radio in South Everett. On FM, all that REALLY counts is that initial 60 dBu contour.......

I've been up to La Conner, Oak Harbor, etc. and never have heard CFCP on 98.9. KLCK dominates.

I didn't say EVERYWHERE. It's spotty. Nor exclusively (depends on the atmospheric conditions) You're most likely to hear CFCP on hills on Whatcom County, the San Juans and areas closer to the Canadian border....

How far is CFCP from Bellingham? I would think it's got to be at least 70 miles, pretty impressive for a full class B up against an almost full class C.

It's MORE than that, something like 160 miles. Like the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Strait of Georgia seems to act like an amplifier for many Vancouver Island signals. Which probably explains why CHWF and CKLR occasionally clash with KRWM and KIRO-FM respectively up here as well. Tiger Mountain stations also come in pretty badly up here....

How far have you heard CHWF and CKLR? Again, never have picked them up on my Island/Skagit County travels.

Wow, that's pretty impressive! Why do Tiger Mountain stations come in so badly, yet Cougar stations seem to have a clear shot to Bellingham?
