Some old stations I found

Hey Guys:

During my research I found some stations from way back when.

Would anybody know the formats of these stations?

1. KAPP 93.5 (Redondo Beach) 1961 to 1965. Later became KKOP Adult Std.

2. KJAS 103.1 (Newport Beach) 1960 to 1962, later became KNBB and KOCM in 1964.

3. KNBB 103.1 (Newport Beach) 1962 to 1964.

4. KPLI 99.1 (In Riverside) Feb 27, 1959 to 1965. Later became Religous KBBL in 1965.

I really appreciate your help on this one.

Thanks

T.J.

KAPP 93.5 was MOR. They had a staff of jocks including Bill Lorin who later went on as a newsman at KFWB and Jim Coniff.

As far as 99.1 is concern KBBL remained a religious station until 1978, by which time it became KGGI, then known as K-99.

The first song played, according to a jock who was there, was "We Are Family." When the station signed on as KGGI construction was still underway in their new studios and during some spots you could hear the sound of construction.

That station first began broadcasting from the Riverside Plaza and its transmitter I believe was there, or somewhere in the lowlands of Riverside. Apparently the station had trouble being received within Riverside. Today their transmitter is atop Heaps Peak in the San Bernardino Mountains and with 2,500 watts (I believe) they can be heard, with a decent car radio, throughout most of the L.A. Basin.

I am not sure when they moved their transmitter to the peak and changed the city of license from Riverside to San Bernardino.

Furthermore when KGGI began it was a typical top 40 for its time. I don't know the name of the PD who in just a few years later developed the "sound" of the station that would bring the station success in later years.

To answer your question about 99.1 prior to 1978, I too have attempted to find answers to that question, only to be met with vague, general answers.

I have heard around the KBBL owner was bit of a holy roller and the station was his personal preaching stick at times.

Oddly, the fictitious radio station in The Simpsons is called KBBL.

KGGI has always had a Riverside col. As KBBL it was a rather pedestrian paid religion station with nothing memorable. The owner a Mr.Goad lived in the basement below the studio. When it became KGGI the transmitter site was on a rather high ridge in Woodcrest with a full 50kw, but the signal didn't cover Redlands. As a result a translator was installed on one of the towers of co-owned KMEN 1290 in the Highland area on 98.9. The studios used most of the time were also co-located there as well. The Riverside studios were used mostly to run the Sunday morning public affairs tapes. The transmiter was first moved to Box Spring mountain were KOLA remains to this day. KGGI's power was greatly reduced at that site. A later move to Heaps Peak provided the massive coverage the station now enjoys.
