Some thoughts on V-103

Also, as others have mentioned, the fact that they are live 24/7 in this day and age is amazing. Whether you like or dislike their music or air talent, you have to have appreciation for the fact that they are always live and local.

Agreed!

V103 and rival HOT 107.9 all have live local jocks around the clock.

V103 syndicates Clear Channel's "In The Den" with Big Tigger early Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings. I also believe Larry Tinsley's gosepl show on Sunday mornings syndicates from here to sister station 102 JAMZ in Orlando.

HOT 107.9 syndicates Radio One's Russ Parr weekend show for about 3 hours early Saturday mornings. HOT 107.9's "Spirit of Hip-Hop" gospel show with CoCo Brotha syndicates live from here to all Radio One urbans on Sunday mornings.

Yeah, but those syndications are at the lowest points of listenership. When the demos tune back in, they're back live. Speaking of which, that reminds me: Whatever happened to Eminem (or however she spelled her version) at Hot and (I can't think of her name right now) the former MD at V who subbed and did weekend work? I miss them being on the air.

M&M (Marsha) hasn't been on-air at HOT 107.9 in years. I believe she wasn't even on-air when HOT flipped from 97.5 to 107.9? I know she just resigned from Radio One a couple of months ago where she was doing some type of work for the entire RO cluster.

Tosha Love, former MD and weekend on-air jock exited V103 some months back too. I heard she is working on some type of television show. I've been wondering if she was going to fill the vacant midday spot at HOT 107.9 since Ramona Debreaux exited after serving plenty of years with the station.

Sheesh, that goes to show how long ago that I've listened to the stations! Thanks for the update. There's not too many female jocks that I like, but I've always liked their voices, along with Porsche Foxx's. Porsche lost me, though, when she was on afternoon drive when she had that psychic lady on all the time. It really took away a lot of integrity from the show, IMO.

Uh Oh, Well heres my reply. Being a 43 yr old white male, I also remember the V-103 of the past. It was a cool station. I also recall all of the "White People cause all of our problems" thing was not aired at the time. Waok is one of the worst stations to listen to if you have a (OPEN MIND) about Race...Because all they ever hype over there is " Whitey is the problem" in our people. Why cant V,Waok just broadcast without all of the "Racism" in thier stations? I do believe that its time to stop this type of "hate"! What if any other number of Radio Stations in Atlanta decided to air something like "Black people are a problem in America" We all know that Atlanta radio would begin to lose licences, and announcers, and protests galore would commence. But hey, Im old, un-hot and in my mind, V-103 is not what it used to be....

I think some of the comments in this thread highlighted what is reflected in WAOK. Race is an issue. Atlanta lives in what was the heart of the confederacy. As much as many of us would like to think race is not an issue, time after time, we get smacked in the face because it is an issue, the issue. And it is reflected in our media.

This is so true. But I think that the owners of the stations mentioned need to really stop and take notice.. WHO really wants to hear this day after day? Do the owners of V and WAOK just want and need only Black listeners? Should these stations evaluate what is going out over thier airwaves? I do not view race as a issue. I think that both stations should have to answer as to why this is thier talking point ! I think that its a very shallow issue and one that ALL need to move from.

Jena 6. Race is an issue. It's not shallow and has deep roots.

This is why WAOK promotes discussing racial issues. Until people go beyond thinking it is a shallow topic, we'll be stuck in this same time period of "i don't see any racism" -- you might as well say that you don't see hate in the world because you're the top Christian at your church.

It's just not reality.

What I think will stop the racial issues are the rock, country, AC and top 40 stations also denouncing racism publicly, even if they do it as an on-air bit. It's not just the responsibility of WAOK.

Jena 6 is plain ignorance. Stupidity at it greatest. REDNECKS with hatred. Im sorry to say this, but Black stations must let go of this continued mention on the air. White People are not at the heart of all of the race issues in this country, this city, this world. Moron's with little education, parents that are legally stupid, those are the real reasons. WAOK is Atlanta's example of a RACIST Radio Station.. Dr White in the morning is Atlanta's biggest race bater. All she talks of is how she wants to Empower those who need it. Sorry Dr White, by telling your listeners that "Whitey is always the problem". More stupidity from WAOK. Rob Wilson , Shelly Winter, now these are hosts that will talk to you about issues and they dont involve how much White People have hurt blacks. This is a mentality that needs to be ended. Sad this is though, WAOK (could) be a decent station. Just only if the topic wasnt always how the white man, wants to keep the bro down.

Well, I'm glad you have a strong opinion against racism. Fact still remains that it exists. No one should act like it doesn't. I'll leave it alone at that because it's not even a matter of opinion. And we all know it.

I think V-103 is one of the few stations left in Atlanta that have had pretty much the same format since the heyday of FM in the late 70's (since they switched from PLO). I am amazed that corporate radio hasn't took a crap on them like they have every other station they touch. They do their best to target their market, and that means playing hip-hop which is IN these days. I am not a hip-hop dude but you can't say they shouldn't be playing hip-hop tracks today, they want to keep their long time hold on their demo. They're evolving with the times. They are one of the few FM's left that have real live talent, and put themselves "out there" locally. I remember back in the 80's when other Atlanta stations in other formats did that before got sold out to the corporate swine. Personally I guess because I am a 32 year old white old fart according to some I don't care for hip-hop, but admittedly I've found myself listening to the Quiet Storm when I'm pissed off which happens alot lately. (Also found myself listening to Kiss 104.1 as alot of "old school" R&B were top-40 hits I grew up listening to on "Atlanta's Hit Radio Z-93" in the late 70's and 80's as a kid. I guess I am old.)

As far as Jena 6 I hear alot of fellow white folks just wishing that people would stop talking about it. Yeah, let's sweep racism and bigotry under the rug like we do all our issues in the US, like lack of a real health care system, open borders, dead soldiers for oil profits, illegal aliens, terrorism- it will just go away right? Oh no someone is going to call me a Mike Malloy but so what. Reality is bigotry and racism is alive and well in 2007. Sad it takes something like Jena 6 to force us to deal with it. Seems alot of us white people are so pissed off we always have to want to start fights with someone for no reason at all. I remember seeing a slogan painted on the side of a building in the 1979 film "Being There" and it read:

"America aint s**t because the white man has a God complex" sad to say I have to say that's true. It's almost sickening to me. What makes me more sick is how we treat other human beings of all races, like corporate radio ownership takes the biggest mother lode crap on a once beautiful industry, it seems America likes taking a crap on any minority or anyone who doesn't hold the same ideologies.

If I chose to be a bigot (growing up in "redeck" Smyrna I was exposed to plenty of mouthbreathing inbreds) I would never have even met some of the kindest REAL genuine people who just happen to be a little darker than myself, nor met some of the most beautiful women in my life who have incredible curves and don't have to get skin cancer with a fake tan- but hey that's me I choose to see people for who they are. I am so glad my late mother taught me well.

DAMN, you on point bruh! The Jena 6 situation was the wake up call for racism in 2007. I wonder how many stations in ATL actually covered or mentioned it besides the Urban stations? I know for a fact 95.5 The Beat didn't and they supposed to be the #1 Hip-Hop station. GO FIGURE

I have also noticed that V-103 suffers from same disease that every other radio station in this city has.
The disease is playing the same songs over & over, day in,day out!!!! Make it stop!!!!! ::)
Is it too much to ask to expanded the playlist??? But, what do I know,I just a former listener of Atlanta radio.
