SOME WELH CHANGES

OK so they're not a major player, but the station has been mentioned in the past due to the oldies block weekdays from 2-7PM. I've heard new ballsier imaging & instead of "Solid gold, oldies, & soul", it's now "Classic hits and soul". There's even a live jock on during part of that music block: Dave Anthony, & he is live because he gives the temp. I haven't figured out if they've added more songs to the library but they're still the only place you can hear Fabian, Donna Summer, & Cream in the same half hour. Kinda like about 5 XM channels all rolled into one. Sounds good if you like the kind of radio where you never know what you'll hear next.

Dave Anthony has been around the market for 20 years...got teeth cut at WXIN at RIC, spinning for Misc Express and various clubs over that time frame as well, was at Kix 106 as Johnny Thunder and has been at WELH pretty much since they signed on as manager/consultant. Good head for music and he's got some good friends that are deeper into music than I am (which is pretty deep...Titantic depths).

They have a website and I think it's fairly new as in the past when I've done a search for WELH I always ended up at the BSR site. Site is http://www.welh.net/site/
I've heard the oldies hours but never heard anyone live. I notice the guy in charge is David Schiano. I wonder if he's Dave Anthony. Schiano? Familiar name. Any relation?

Don't overlook the fact that they have a construction permit to increase power from 150 watts to 1.2kW and relocate to the WNAC tower at twice the height. I'll bet you can expect more and more drastic changes in the future like stereo and even HD. This will be the station to watch. Maybe the best radio in Providence will be in the educational portion of the band. Any guesses on where the format will go?

Better coverage or not they'll never really be there to compete with anyone and are probably not aiming to do so anyway. What could help making people aware of them is if the Providence Journal did a piece on them, especially with the lack of oldies airplay in the state that encompassed the 50s through the 70s. They do play early rock and roll. By the way I heard Dave Anthony the other day and he was actually taking requests and apparently getting some too. At least someone sounds like he's having fun on the air.
