somebody forgot about Knoxville's greatest

I was reading about K-towns great radio, and you forgot, the greatest jock who ever came
through, was Shotgun Stevens on WOKI hits 100......84-86. Never heard a better jock, and i wish i knew
where he was, he turned that town on it's ass.

Gotta say, he did Grease(man)up the nights. I worked with him then doing middays at HITS 100, along with Jim Wilson afternoons and Jeff Jarnigan in the Morning. Last word I had on him, and that was in the mid 90's, was he cleaned up the act and was in a Morning Zoo in FLA. Jacksonville maybe. Dropped off the screen since then.

Here's a goofy thing....remember MAX 105.3? Horne Radio Group 80's station they had running 2001-2003 or so? Mike Beverly was PD'ing it and wanted to bring in recognizable 80's jocks from the market. My name didn't test well, but Shotgun's did. So Mike had me voice tracking nights as "Shotgun Stevens".

Just using the name?

you had to be crazy too, otherwise, i imagine people called ya with that, hey, thats not you.......

but by then, i guess they weren't paying enough to grab a guy doing mornings, but was he wroking?

is he on air? Where is Jim Wilson

Shotgun Stevens (aka Doc Holliday) spent the past 15 years at XL106.7/Orlando (WXXL) with tremendous success. He hosted the "Doc & Johnny" show there and recently left the station after he and the station could not come to an agreemtent on a new contract.

I spoke to him last week and he's doing quite well. He is the game announcer for the Orlando Predator's arena football games. He's also consulting some young/small market morning shows and is involved in some other projects as well.

wow.......smaller world than i thought.....not that he has a friends still back here, but i had no idea, he was a part of that show in orlando. I guess when you change names, the rest of us figure your somebody different.

It's hard to belive he would give up on air........Orlando Radio sucks bad right now. I dont know why they couldn't get that guy a deal, cause, poor johnny and the rest, whoa.......... you guys need to pipe out Phil Williams or send some help! Who are the best local talent in everybody's opinion.

and, anybody know where and what happened to Jim Wilson?

Jim Wilson

The last I heard about Jim was that he had a tragic accident. I believe he was still living in Greenville, SC at the time...he was working on his roof of his house one day and fell off, sustaining severe head injuries. At the time, it was told that he would never be completely normal again. I have not heard anything else since then.

If anyone has an update or can clarify this story please do. Jim was quite a talent and a great guy I worked with several years ago.

TK

yea, i need more info.........what year? what were the circumstances. Can we find news stories on this? was he still in radio?

UPDATE:

As of this past Monday, (September 10, 2007), former WOKI-FM (HITS 100) DJ "Shotgun Stevens" who now goes by the air name, "Doc Holiday", debuted his new morning show down in Orlando, Florida on, "K92".

"K-92" is a "Country Music Station" that is owned by Cox Radio. I never dreamed I would see the day that Doc Holiday (Shotgun Stevens) would ever work on a Country Music Station.

I have been a fan of his for the past 22 years ever since he did nights over at WOKI, and have been able to stay in touch with him ever since he left WOKI back in early 1986. I usually talk to him via email at least once a week or every other week.

IMO, Doc (Shotgun Stevens) is probably one of the Top 5 DJ's to ever grace the Knoxville Airwaves.

Yes, Doc had to wait out a non-compete with his former employer befor he could go across the street to K92/Orlando.

He is THRILLED to be where he is now.

<<< He is THRILLED to be where he is now. >>>>

Yeah, he seems to have more freedom at "K92" from the way I understood him.

Glad he's is back on the airwaves after a 6 month hiatus.

I need to tune in one morning and listen to him online.

uh, that should read............."working".........he was probably wroking in the 80's

For those of you who want to know where all Doc (Shotgun) has worked since he left WOKI in early 1986.

After Doc (Shotgun) left WOKI in early 1986, he ended up doing mornings at "99.7 WDJX" in Louisville, Kentucky. That is also the very last station where he used the on air name, "Shotgun Stevens".

Then he left WDJX in 1987, and started doing mornings for a radio station up in "Allentown, Pennsylvania". Management made him change his on air name to "T.J. Grey".

In 1988 he left "Allentown, PA" and started doing afternoons at "Z-104" in Norfolk, Virginia. That is also the radio station where he first started using his current on air name, "Doc Holliday". After several months of doing afternoons on Z-104, he was made the new morning guy on there.

I did lose touch with Doc (Shotgun) in 1989 while he was doing mornings on "Z-104" in Norfolk. However I got back in touch with him nearly 15 years later in 2005 down at "XL-106.7".

The way I understand it, after he left "Z-104" he ended up working for a station in Philadelphia, PA, and a station in Washington DC. However, he must have been at both stations for a very short period of time, because he started working for "XL-106.7" in 1990.

Remember "Beg for a Record" when Shotgun would have female listeners plead and beg for a record. I was listening to DJX when he tried the same thing, this time "Beg for a Coffee Mug". He was taking calls live on the air with no delay; do you see where this is going? Shotgun took a call where a woman concluded her beg by saying, "...I'm just sh*t without one!" Shotgun immediately went to a stopset. Good times!

I remember he also had his "Obscene Phone Call" line, Special Guest DJ on Friday Nights, and his on air war with Jeff Jarnigan <aka> Pig Virus over his radio Jingle that Jarnigan refused to give him. However, most people know that was a publicity stunt.

I also remember Doc (Shotgun) and former WOKI Jock, "JJ Randle" being on the air together raising hell on New Years Eve of 85/86 shouting "HAPPY NEW YEAR DAMNIT!!!!" once at the top of each hour up through 3am for all 4 of the time zones across the country. I think they were both drunk that night.

I also remember a few weeks later during Doc's (Shotgun's) final days at WOKI he pulled a publicity stunt where he played a parody of Foreigner's hit "Hot Blooded", called, "Orange Blooded" 35 times in a row after Tennessee defeated Miami in the "86 Sugar Bowl". It reminded of that stunt from the movie "FM". Supposedly after the 35th time that he played "Orange Blooded", management showed up at the station, forced their way into the studio, and had him removed. It was only a week or two later that Shotgun was gone for good. There are many people who believe that Doc (Shotgun) was fired from WOKI because of that stunt, however he left WOKI by his own choice after he got the morning job at WDJX up in Louisville.

Any of you remember that caller, "Danny The Geek", who was Shotgun's nemesis back when he was doing nights at WOKI?

Good times indeed!

Now you see, that's FUN radio! That's what I'm talking about, radio fun like that doesn't seem to happen anymore. And a lot of it wasn't just the morning show, other dayparts used to have their own identities as well. I was still living on the east coast in 1985, 1986, and Philly radio was fun too. It sounds like Knoxville being a smaller market was able to do more local and creative stunts than the bigger markets like Philadelphia, or New York, but people still talk about those stunts so it made some noise. I remember there was this T-40 night jock in Philly on the now defunct "Hot Hits" WCAU FM 98.1 Terry "Motor Mouth" Young. I was in HS in 1982, he played "Valley Girl" Frank, & Moon Unit Zappa over and over for at least an hour or so. He was fired, for a couple weeks I seem to remember, and then came back. He was more popular than ever after that. I'm sure it was a staged stunt, or maybe it wasn't. He's on XM's 60's channel now, I just may have to call him and ask him about it. BTW What were Knoxville's cool T-40 stations to listen to in the 60's and 70's? I had Philly's 56 WFIL, and could catch 77 WABC in NYC. Both on AM of course, and does any one have any airchecks from the K-Town 60's & 70's time period?

You are exactly right! It was fun radio back then.

You really can't find the talent like that much anymore. It seems that a lot of stations are just trying to focus mainly on music and playing liners only these days.

Just to prove an example, we've been talking about former Knoxville WOKI DJ (Shotgun Stevens) who is now known as "Doc Holliday". Well, just recently when he took the new job doing mornings at country music radio station "K92" down in Orlando, I have read certain comments from blogs down in Orlando where listeners who normally would not listen to country music are willing to listen to music they don't particularly care for just to be able to listen "Doc Holliday".

It seems that radio talent is more important to listeners than music alone. However, there are still a lot of companies out there who still can't seem to figure that out. I don't even like country music myself, but heck I would be willing to put up with a few country songs in order to hear my all time favorite DJ.

Even when Doc (Shotgun) did mornings at Top 40 Radio Station, "XL-106.7" down in Orlando, I still listened to him, even though I don't like most of today's newer top 40 music. I just enjoyed listening to Doc, and was willing to put up with The Backstreet Boys and Brittney Spears. I did tell Doc (Shotgun) one time that I do miss hearing him play the same type of Top 40 Music that he played back when he did nights on WOKI from 1984 to 1986. I would give anything to hear him play that type of music again one day, and to hear him let loose on the air with the crude and wild "Greaseman" like attitude that he had at WOKI back during that time period just one more time before he retires one day. Even though he has calmed his gimmick down some over the years, Doc (Shotgun) is still a great DJ.

To answer your question about what were the popular Top 40 Radio Stations in Knoxville back during the 60's and 70's. The stations that were popular back during those time periods were the original WNOX-AM 990, WKGN-AM 1340, WRJZ-AM 62. That is the only three that I can think of right now, however there was another station "W149" which I cannot remember the call letters for.

As for airchecks for radio stations in the 60's and 70's I have also been trying to acquire some over the years myself.
