Somebody has to talk about Chri$tma$

So let's get it over with. It will be Lite Rock 105 after Thanksgiving. There's no reason for Coast to do it considering they're pushing more variety now. No one else has ever gone all Christmas early. Actually this year, with Polar Express being released on DVD on 11/22 it might not be a bad idea for a giveaway tied in with all Christmas beginning the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Now we got it over with. Bring on Domenic.

I HATE Christmas music, boring, boring, boringZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I really think the novelty of the "all Christmas" thing is done. People I talk to are bascially split on it. The people who like it, really like it. And the people who hate it, REALLY hate it.

I don't see why a station would alienate half of their audience by going all Christmas in November when they can please the Christmas music lovers by starting to sprinkle some songs in starting in early December.

It's a classic example of bad Providence programming, no one using their heads, just reacting to what's been done in the past. I say Coast goes first, they get my vote.

Coast stopped doing it last year & I don't think they'll go back to it. I think one all Christmas station in Providence is enough & the logical one is LITE. Apparently they're confident enough to know even if some listeners leave them because of it they will come back. This year more than ever with Coast playing music that's all over the road from AC to classic rock I don't think LITE is worried that people used to their music will abandon them permanently for Coast. Coast now runs more of a risk of alienating listeners who may not come back after the holidays.

Here is the essential problem with Christmas music - 99% of it (at least the stuff that gets played on the radio) just plain sucks. There is nothing intrisically interesting about "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer", "The 12 Pains of Christmas", The Singing Dogs, Alvin & the Chipmunks, the overblown, melodramatic whining of divas like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, J-Lo, et al,
or the bombastic overproduction of most of the rest of the stuff. It's just bad music. Add to that the fact that most of what gets played isn't technically "Christmas" music, i.e. there is no religious significance to it. Songs about snow and winter and Santa Claus - ok; songs with any religious connotation - verboten. I'm not religious myself, but I understand the frustration expressed by those who complain about Christmas being usurped by Madison Avenue and drained of any of its original meaning.

So do we need an all-Christmas format? No, not really. Its only value is to low-billing stations who think that the format will get their station played in-store at smaller retail establishments that can't afford to have their music piped in via satellite.

Back to the topic:

Usually, it's AC or Soft AC stations (like Providence's WWLI-105.1) that go All-Christmas.

There seems to be some sort of "compatibility" between AC and All-Christmas formats.

While many All-Christmas stations do well in the ratings, many of them are AC's or Soft AC's that are usually at or near the top of the local Arbitrons anyway, whether they go all-Christmas for several weeks in November and December or not.

I agree whole heartedly. It's definately an easy transition for an AC to go to Xmas and back.

My money is still on Coast.

He can go to work at Radio Disney if he wants many virgins to visit him.
