Somebody Out There Actually Appreciates Us Old Farts

Fifty-six years in radio and still going strong...

Legendary Dick Biondi back to spinning oldies

By Robert Feder

It's the best radio news of the year: Dick Biondi, Chicago's greatest rock 'n' roll disc jockey of all time, is coming back. The broadcast legend and Radio Hall of Famer signed a multiyear agreement Wednesday to join ABC-owned "True Oldies" WZZN-FM (94.7) as evening personality.

Starting next week, he'll be on from 9 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday. [EDIT]

That's good news. It sounds like they have some good things planned for the show. Wonder if they would ever consider calling WZZN WLS-FM again?

There are so few that last in radio after age 40 let alone 74!

As I'm sure we all know Dick Biondi was on WKBW before going to WLS. Covering 17 states and at least two nations.

Debaser, there's more of us then you think, that appreciate you and your work.

Dick Biondi broke a record of a friend of mine in 1959 on WKBW. This one hit wonder has been playing music ever since.

And indeed it should be WLS-FM!

D.B.:

Arguably, you have the best commercial voice to hit Buffalo's airwaves.
(I think the main one who might argue about it is Jefferson Kaye)

We don't forget about fellow ol' Farts.

So, alw, do you want to convince the ad agencies so I can get some work? It's just a hop, skip and jump down the QE...

;D

Who hops, skips and jumps anymore these days, DB? Isn't everything simply an mp3 file away from being on the radio somewhere in America? I'll join the chorus (though not the chorus line ;)) in favor of hearing more of your voice on agency commercials in Buffalo.

There seems to be a preponderance of the same old "agency favorites" doing commercials on Western New York radio, as if one cluster produces 75% of all agency spots. You'd think the agencies would recognize the sameness when the same people mumble and mis-articulate their way through various commercials, but the agencies and clients must be tone deaf. That said, there are a number of outstanding production guys scattered all over WNY stations (I don't want to sound like an ex-radio-malcontent.... even though I may occasionally play the role on these boards.)

Maybe it's the "low cost provider" syndrome ("get the buy, produce the spot, send it around and charge an extra $50 for the guy who voiced the commercial") that causes this sameness. Years ago in Binghamton, one station had a policy of NO talent fees when spots traveled. That certainly was a real morale booster for the jocks and the production department.

One wonders if certain people periodically fall out of grace with the agencies? It wasn't long ago that your distinctive voice, compelling reads and interpretive style graced the Buffalo airwaves. [/Mike]
