Somebody please explain what was on WCOJ last evening....!!??

Did I miss something?? Let me start by saying I missed the beginning of the ‘bit’. Last night on my way home from work I heard the evening guy on WCOJ doing a walk around of the station looking for evidence of employees that might ‘go postal’! Given what happened in Lancaster yesterday I thought this was totally classless! Again I’ll admit to coming in late and then not listening long enough to try and ‘get’ what his intention was with this little episode. My first reaction was one of such disgust and anger at what I perceived to be a horrible attempt at humor I lasted no more than 30-45 seconds!

Did you miss something? Probably nothing that would have changed your reaction.
What was on? Robert Hansen doing a bit and showing questionable judgement. A while back there was some online discussion about a bit he did about Chinese people using a Charlie Chan "flied lice" accent which seem intend to offed one-third of the world's population.
When he was host of the morning show (as well as PD and news director), he used to like to play German drinking and martial music.
Then he left to become a BMW mechanic and came back a couple of years later.
WCOJ was starting to show come class but for a long time it was the region's designated "Wacko Station." Maybe old habits die hard.

Re: Somebody please explain WCOJ

I can assure you that WCOJ still Sucks, no matter what JOe Thomas does to it in his PD duties.
I can also assure you that Kevin Jaiber, the station's GSM/GM probably thought that Robert's antics were funny, but he is a nobody in the radio field so it doesn't matter. What does matter is that Ira Rosenblatt the Station's owner is a greedy money grubbing owner from Rhode Island, who only cares about money and ordering Kevin to bully the local companies into buying WCOJ since the station is in their backyard, and how it's the right thing to do instead of chester county companies buying philly radio. I wonder if Kevin is still using his contacts to get his hands on Arbitron Ratings for the Philly market, to leverage his station. When kevin showed up, all of a sudden Kevin had access to Arbitron ratings books that WCOJ did not buy, Hmmmm Curious I wonder how He got his mitts on them then ? I think WCOJ is a horrible station, and quite frankly, they suck as a local news outlet too. Take for example the tragedy that happened in the town of Gap. Now for quite some time, WCOJ has alledged that the area between CHester and Lancaster county was a strong audience for them. So it would have made sense for them to go and behave like a "news bureau" and go cover the news story that occured next-door to them. but did they do that......Not If Dave Ramsey was on air.
I hope WCOJ gets run right into the ground, it's just an old dog that is long overdue for a bullet in it's head.

Well, now that you mention it...
When West Chester resident Nick Berg was beheaded in Iraq...
KYW Newsradio showed up to cover the local angle.
So did 3, 6, 10 and 29.
So did Wilmington newsradio.
So did a CBS crew.

Guess which station did not show up and did not cover the story that day - with CBS mentioning the story every hour on their own air.
Of course, the next day they were able to lift the story out of the paper.

I've heard their morning news.
Cuts from Radio PA two-three-four times in each newscast.
Sometimes they lift cuts from CBS and play the same cut CBS just used in the hourly network news.
The most useful public service they perform is the "Talking Daily Local News" for the visually impaired (i.e., stories from the newspaper).
And there's a voicer phoned in from some guy in Phoenixville (who pops up on several suburban stations).
In contrast, you have a station like WNPV, Lansdale (also suburban and on a local channel) which actually gets out and hustles for local news and has an excellent presentation for a station its size. It can be done. COJ just doesn't do it.

I've also heard them local spots in the Phillies games for clients in competition with Phillies advertisers (which is against the Phillies broadcast agreement). But maybe the Phils think they need all the rim-shots and let it slide.
At least I haven't heard the "Abortion is Eve-Ill" spots in a while.

Lloyd Roach mortgaged his house to buy the station. Dave Ramsey would have told him not to do it. Don't knock Dave. Lloyd should have paid attention to him.

Does the company which owns COJ still publish gay newspapers, too?

Man o man! Interesting info on COJ. I recently moved back to PA and (having worked in radio in the past and being a fan of good local radio) I always look for local radio stations. I was giving WCOJ a shot but that was just classless and so unfunny it was/is pathetic. If he was trying to be ‘stern like’ it did not work. Guess I will keep searching for good local radio. I can not pull in NPV where I live now though I do remember the station and used to listen now and then back when I lived in Bucks Co. Also remember seeing them around town during my days at the old WBUX back in the 90’s!

Well, don't write them off so quickly. Joe Thomas has accomplished a lot in the time he's been there. And - who knows - after this they may have an opening coming in afternoon drive.

The downside is - Joe Thomas has accomplished a lot in the time he's been there. Who knows when an attractive opportunity might come along for him.

Joe Thomas should show that he has some degree of respect for his accomplishments and Leave Kevin Jaiber and Ira Rosenblatt in the lurch.
Besides if he does leave, Kevin will only bring in more syndicated programming by having that guy who does the weekend talk radio countdown show as the morning show. Quite frankly WCOJ is a howling joke, it's anything but local, and oh yeah, It high time someone realize how Worthless ROn McNeil's show is too, his claim to fame is being a jock on EZ-101, looooong before B101. Ha ha. Why in hell does Chester County have to have such a piece of sh@! for it's only radio station?

Don't forget "The Big Cheese" (WCHE), as long as we are on the subject of POS radio stations.
No need to pick up Doug Stephan (he might actually be too liberal for them; then again, they took Ed Schultz, so maybe they don't care).
But they still have Robert and Dougie (two previous morning hosts) on the payroll, and "The Penguin" (Ron McNeil), also did the morning show at one point.
And DB doesn't get out to Chester County/ I best Westwood One would be happy to let them take the I-Man.

Even so, COJ sounds a lot better than some of the suburban stations around here.
Better than CHE - two geezers talking.
Better than ILM - picture student radio but in a retirement home.

I haven't heard all of them. What is region's WORST station?
