Somebody streeeeeam!

Seems like all of a sudden, everyone is streaming again. A few years ago many music stations pulled the plug because of licensing and royalty issues with a potentially global audience.

Now it seems like everybody is back to streaming on the web. Was there a compromise reached?

I apologize if I'm repeating a previous discussion. If so, please send me the link.

Voiceover artists were seeking extra compensation to have their commercials broadcast on the internet. So until that issue was worked out many streams were pulled. Then along came some new software that replaced all the local on air commercials with different commercials for the internet feed. That took care of all the legal issues. Now once again streaming is back in full force.

I only wish Emmis & Entercom would start streaming on many of their stations. I used to listen to WXSS & WYMX Milwaukee from Gary Indiana until the stream was pulled in early 2002. It hasn't been up since. I would have liked to listen to Chill from New York before it went all Smooth Jazz. I'm curious about Red in St. Louis. As for the Loop in Chicago, it was streaming when Bonneville owned it, but as soon as Emmis took over in a station swap with the Phoenix cluster, Emmis pulled the plug on the stream. Even Nextmedia used to stream on the web and I would listen to the old Star 93.5 (now it's on 96.7) from Joliet Illinois & Star105 from Woodstock Illinois, but they stopped streaming too. As soon as I can get a high speed connection, I will definitely be listening to internet only radio as well as checking out some radio stations streaming on the internet. I only hope Entercom Milwaukee starts streaming again.

Clear Channel is streaming their stations in markets 1-25. Entercom is doing the same. Infinity just started streaming without subscribing to AOL.
I have been having fun keeping up with all the new streaming stations linked at http://macradiofm.com

AFTRA wasn’t the only issue though. ASCAP/BMI/SESAC/RIAA made a stink about music royalty payments for online streaming of copyright music. These fees / reporting requirements are still keeping some stations from streaming.

And actually they are not a big deal anymore. The RIAA is the only one you have to worry about, and all you have to do is report to them once a month with how much you have to pay. It's not that hard.

Perhaps not for commercial stations. But some non-commercials with small budgets can't afford it.

Understandable, for commercial broadcasters depending on the size of your online audience you're looking at approximately $100 for Soundexchange.com (plus $250 or $500 annual fee)

They have different rates that are roughly half that for Non-commercial and educational stations.
