Someone is getting fired

Around this time last year I started wondering what my Christmas bonus was going to be. About two weeks later, I started to wonder if I was going to get a bonus at all. About three weeks later, I was starting to wonder why everyone else got a bonus and I didn’t. About four weeks later I got fired.

It was my first time being let go and it sucked really bad. That is why I am starting this thread. Unfortunately someone has had the pleasure of telling me that someone in the Triad is about to get fired. On one hand I want to tell this person, and on the other I feel as though it isn’t my business.

It really stinks that these types of things happen, much less during the holiday season. If you remotely think that this post is about you, get some good tape and be prepared.

For the record, please do not ever tell me that someone is going to be let go… unless it has to do with myself of course.

How about this for a question: Would you rather be warned that you are going to be let go, or to just be fired?

Maybe this person will get lucky and management will change their mind, highly unlikely though.

JJ McCain

always better to know. i'm sure you would have wanted a little warning, jj, instead of being treated like the invisible man. i know u have been put in a tough spot, but maybe you should tell that person.

 I usually didn't worry too much about it, because it usually was Me! It was alway's my feelings as I believe "Imus" said one time " It's always been my policy to do what the hell I want and if they don't like it, they can get somebody else, JACK!" And they usually did..Ha!

J J, I think I would tell him or at least give him a strong heads up. Most companys just don't give much in severence pay these days, jobs are hard to find, and the last thing this guy needs to do is spend a lot of money on the holidays thinking he can pay for it in January. It's also good when you can look for a new job and make use of the "old" stations resorces.

are we talking about josie here, jj? because that's been in the works for a little while. they've been grooming katie for her spot for over a year now.

Is this referring to the format-wheel rumor mill that has been churning for quite a while (i.e. Sunny 93.9's "cloudy" future, the revolving door in Greensboro known as 98.7, etc.)?

No, this doesn't refer to Josie. I def would have given her the heads up. I really don't know the person I have referenced. And it has nothing to do with any format changes.

I can't believe you even have to ask this question... OF COURSE you tell the person IF it's a definate. My husband was fired once and a coworker overheard the information the day before. By telling my husband, it allowed him to absorb the information and collect his thoughts before being blind-sided. Allowing him to respond better and ask better prepared questions and get immediate closure, almost putting his GM in an awkward position because he came prepared with some tough questions and demands.

This only works if it's a definate. If your only speculating the persons getting the ax and they don't, you'd be an A-Hole for even insenuating such a thing.

Not to be ugly, but I have to assume that if you know and you haven't worked in the building in however many months, then the buzz has already made it around the inside, don't you think?

I've been watching this thread and feel saddened by it. Sometimes we find ourselves in the legitimate role of mentor and confidant to people with whom we travel in our professions. In those circumstances, they might need or want to share stuff with us -- like pending personnel moves. If it's a legitimate mentoring relationship, then you have to take these conversations to the grave.

Sometimes, we work as part of a team and we have to be privy to this kind of stuff as part of the planning process for what happens next. Again, in that scenario, you take confidential information to the grave.

But if you're not in either one of those circumstances, and someone shares as gossip something they think they know about another person's job and livelihood, the person who shared it is a lowlife for talking out of school and doesn't really deserve the position with which they've been entrusted. They should be the one getting canned.

When we're on the receiving end of gossip, we have some choices: Ignore it. Tell the person who shared it, straight up, that we think it reflects poorly on their personal integrity that they're slinging gossip. Contact the person most affected and say, "Hey, we don't know each other very well but I heard something that may or may not be true, and felt like you should know." It's called integrity and compassion.

Starting a thread -- or feeding a thread -- that's filled with innuendo, speculation, and gossip about a potential firing? That's not high on the humanity scale at any time of year, especially this time of year.

My name is Bruce Cole, by the way. I'm glad to put my name to what I just wrote.

Bruce Pip,

I appreciate your heartfelt opinion on this and being a very rare poster myself, I was a bit underwhelmed at the subject line and thought it was almost posted for "shock value". After reading thru it, I quickly deteremined that my first instinct was right..

However, a fair question was layed out for all to weigh in on and that's do you tell or not. I have no problem giving my opinion on that. Though JJ never called any names, I dare say he's really hoping everyone would beg him to and THAT would be truely tasteless and tacky.

If the truth were known, he probably doesn't even know of anyone in particular who's getting the ax because he hasn't been around in a while. I have a hard time believing that someone of authority would confide in him this life altering information (no offense, or anyone outside the business for that matter). One can always speculate that some radio personality won't survive the new year and unfortunately if your vague enough there's a good chance you'll be right.

Having said that I appreciate your opinion and for the record don't consider his post full of innuendo, speculation and gossip since no names or even stations have been posted.

I did however get the feeling while reading your post that I was in an episode of "7th Heaven", getting a good "talking too" by the Mr Camden.

It's me...I knew that I shouldn't have been surfing radio boards when my job doesn't even involve radio. Darn this spectator sport of mine.

At least I'll get to draw unemployment.

Thanks a whole heckuvalot.

Maybe his source is wrong? All he know's is this is a possibility. Really it could be anyone in the Triad; all stations make changes this time of the year. So hope for the best and expect the worst. Hopefully this will work out in the person's best interest either way it goes; getting out of radio might not be a bad idea. All we can do is wait and see what happens.

Bruce, you made some good points. Tina, you made a great point... I am not in radio at the moment. That being said, why would I care about shock value and getting responses from people?

I agree with Bruce's first paragraph and am keeping quiet. I would also have to say that my source is very reliable.

Just because a person is not in radio at the moment, does not mean that they didn't make friends while they were in radio. People do keep in touch.

Hopefully this individual knows something is up. Have a great night.

I was in radio for 40 years before getting a real job. I was fired seven times - three from the same station. They kept hiring me back! Go figure. Two kinds of people in the biz .... those that have been and those that will be.

No matter how it comes, it is not easy. I have had notice, no notice, severence, no severence, a clue, no clue. It just sucks no matter how it happens.

Most people who get into the radio business - or at least in the "olden days" - did it because of a love for it! And most possessed a deep sense of loyalty to their station of the moment. I toughened up a bit over the years, and thought of myself a little more, but being fired never got easy.

Last time it was three days before thanksgiving and a week before the 60th birthday. Got fired the day after Christmas once.

Tell the person and give them the chance to quit!

Ryan,

It's SB!

Mornings are open at Island 106, do you want to jump back in?
