I agree with all of you to an extent. I remember Z Rock, but I was just as happy when 107.5 became The Buzz and stopped their classic rock nonsense.
Like I said, I listened tha past two days and loved it. I listened a week ago and wanted to puke. That's one of the problems I didn't hit well in my post.
The imaging does suck and the lack of preparedness is nauseating. I like hearing Petty, Yes and the Stones on rock radio again because I do consider them to be great rock bands. KIOL is miles better than KDBN in Dallas, or as I like to call it--hairband w/occassional 90's rock or 70's crap on the side.
I'm hoping Fletch has great things in store when he takes over the imaging job.
I have stated many times what I think would be a killer rock station.
Keep the request hour during lunch so peoeple get to hear their choice poison, run AOR during early mornings and all throughout the day.
Sprinkle in some active bands frequently.
At night, switch personalities and become an active rocker with the occassional classic rocker thrown in to keep most people from complaining.
I bet if you programmed a sucker like this right, the bigger audience would come. They wouldn't notice the cahnge at night enough to send hate mail and it would satisfy somewhat the AOR and active rock crowd.
What KIOL could also do that would slaughter every other rock station in Texas is a progressive rock specialty show on Saturday nights followed by a metal show with some balls. Play Cradle of Filth, Pantera, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Dimmu Borgir, Messhugah, Anthrax, Slayer, Sepultura and all of the popular metal acts but also play lesser knowns like Dying Fetus, Cryptic, Emperor, Savagery, etc.
Spotlight new metal talent across the country. Also broadcast this show live on the internet. It would kill, I promise.
Metal can work on commercial radio as long as it is tucked in the right slot.
I would listen to this kind of station all the time!
Just my two cents...
