Heard Ed (email me but don't call) McMann promoting some deal of the week for a sponsor located on Pontiac Street in Cranston. It's Pontiac AVENUE Ed.It's a major road most RI'ers know of.It's also a dead giveaway that he's anywhere but here. When you VT in about 3 New England states though I'm sure it's difficult to figure out which one you're in at the moment. There was really nothing wrong with B101 changing to classic hits but did they have to do it with such overall lack of imagination or concern about anything but how the format fits the overall sales picture for the cluster itself?

Pontiac Avenue in Cranston? The Rhode Island Lottery headquarters perhaps? Anyways, yeah, Ed McMahon also voicetracks WHCN-FM 105.9 of Hartford ("The River 105.9") for PM drive.
______________

Street, Road, Avenue, Court, Lane..who really cares about such a minute thing..we all do things like that here and there

I'm Sorry but I disagree with you.A local Jock should know something like that.
now if if was a dead end street in Westerly and he called it a lane then that would be different.
If you want to let that slide why don't we talk about Steve Laffey the Mayor of Providence.

Think about it before you correct me.

Yeah I agree. Since Ed has done Boston radio for years before KISS farmed him out at a CCU pariah I wonder what the reaction would be in Boston to a new or tracked jock referring to local streets wrong. With a market that has the radio heritage of Boston he'd be laughed at by both listeners and other radio people. Plus wouldn't this be station copy if it's a sponsor? When I think of what B101 has become! Yeah they had a good book but McDonald's sells more burgers than the cafes on the east side. It doesn't mean they have any more meat in them.

Sorry but you're wrong here or at least I'll say I disagree. A native hears that & thinks "the guy is clueless". The listeners will never care enough to call the station about it & most don't even know radio message boards exist but that's the imprint in the minds of those who hear it. It might not be for avenue to be called street or road if we're talking about a lesser known avenue.

Good thing he doesn't read any copy for sponsors on Oxford Avenue

I'm not even from R.I. and I know it's Avenue....with it being such a main street, I agree that there's no excuse for the mixup, especially since Krispy Kreme is on it!!!! LOL

I agree also...i don't like the whole Ed Mcmann presentation, period! The phone thing kills me...E-mail me all the time...come on now...its a shame all the one on one has been taken out of radio...gone are the days where the jock had the oppertunity to make an impression on a listener one on one via the phone...which ultimatly translated into ratings...thats just one grip i have about the senerio...but, this is just another example...imagine the people listening to that who said to themself...what an idiot...now THERE is an impression huh...lol

I have known Ed for many years...

Ed is one of the nicest persons I know. He also is a Boston native who grew up there, married there and lives there with his large family. KISS-108 SCREWED him big time! The nicest guys always wind up getting screwed the most, ya know?

Ed has the RIGHT to make a living, which is what he's doing by voice tracking in these various markets. He has the RIGHT to feed his family!

Let me tell you something...voice tracking is NOT "fun" for the disk jockey involved. It SUCKS!! Most DJ's get/got into radio because they love(d) it. Believe me, I speak from personal experience. Ed has been in radio since high school, when he interned at the old WBZ-FM right after it went rock. Now to feed his family he has to bascially do bottom of the barrel s**t work! Do you think he enjoys it? Would you?

The next time you "Monday morning quarterbacks" decide to judge someone like Ed, why not try to see things from HIS perspective. Otherwise, you're judging him (and others) WAY too harshly!

Re: I have known Ed for many years...

I 100% agree and couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks LA_Guy for your insight.
______________

TRUTH

Everyone is stil pissed off about Big John & Bruce. It really has nothing to do with Ed personally. B is a big station and it's a shame for any day part to VT'd.

If you're on-air, you'd best NOT be throwing stones. The truth is we all make mistakes now and then. I'd blame the sales or promotional person who didn't do their job of making clear that it was an avenue in the copy they provided.

Re: I have known Ed for many years...

Whether or not he is VT'd or a local legend's replacement, the fact is that the overall quality of Ed's work is excellent. I catch him on WHCN and B-101, and he doesn't "mail it in." As a New Haven, CT native, it may stand out to me like a sore thumb when broadcasters say "NEW Haven" instead of "New HAVEN." And don't get me started on how many times I've heard "WAH-ley Avenue" instead of "WHAY-ley." That doesn't mean they should go back to where they came from and leave the talent pool to Joe from East Haven or Chris from Hamden.

Boston isn't exactly the other side of the planet from which to telecommute. I know plenty of jocks who've commuted far longer distances to do live shows in other markets. Also, voicetracking is not some menial, bottom-of-the-barrel job. It's actually easier to screw it up knowing you can do it over. You're also doing breaks in more rapid succession than when you have benefit of whole songs in a traditional live show.

Voicetracking isn't going away soon. It's a part of the radio landscape. Live and local personality radio has existed next to FMs simulcasting their AMs in the sixties, environmental "beautiful music" on reels that baby boomers' parents flocked to, "Hit Parade" automation of the seventies, satellite formats in the eighties & nineties (how Lite 105 started)... and so on.

Ed didn't start the trend. He's just practicing his craft and feeding his family. Oh yeah, I doubt most listeners notice whether he's sitting there in real time or not. They're being served. Now, excuse me while I head off to do some VT work!

Putting in proper perspective I think you,LA Guy,& Juju are hitting the nails on the head. The reaction here is probably more of a residual one from the firings at B101. Most if not all in the market have voicetracked, although more for their own stations than anything else. You can only work with the material given to you.

I will say though that if more radio people felt free to post & vent, even if anonymously,LA Guy's "right to earn a living" comments would fill a hefty thread themselves. There are ex-radio people here I know along with some working smaller markets than they once did & even ex-full timers now weekending & relegating themselves to doing that permanently & I think they would have comments on getting screwed & their right to earn a living. And yes I know, because I've said it myself, you can get another full time job. All you have to do is be willing to relocate or drive distances to work. It's the nature of the business & we're now seeing some who have been lucky enough to have remained stable most of their careers now facing instability.

I think good has come out of this topic though as it's really not about Ed anymore & I'd rather see broader issues discussed on a local level.
