Someone wasn't happy at Nexstar...

The mumbling from the newsroom here is that a behind the scenes person threatened to sue Howard Beale. I don't know who, but I hope this doesn't kill the blog. Hopefully if Howard comes back, he'll cut down on the personal attacks everyone keeps posting.

I know this board is about radio, but where else can we talk television?

Wouldn't it be tough from a constitutional freedom of speech aspect? If anything, it might silence him if he is gainfully employed in the industry. How would they sue him if they didn't know his identity? Can you sue a pen name? Just a few questions.
Yonkstur

The web site/blog site is obviously registered to someone. A subpoena to the ISP will do the trick. It would be hilarious if it ever went to court. Some of the people accused of being horse's arse's really are. The truth is the ultimate defense.

But to be sued, don't you have to prove malicious (sp?) intent? Sure the poster may have had it but does Beale and how do you prove that?

I'm not a lawyer and I don't play one on the radio.

(1) Beale runs the site, so he might be responsible for what is posted, especially since he moderates it.

(2) Someone out there knows who he is, so the anonymity is shot and hanging over his head is the possibility that he can be outed with the repercussions that can cause.

A lot of us know Mr. Beale's secret identity. There's room for a web site with some insider information and a lively debate or two. Recently, his web site went off the charts. It's okay to disagree, but it got to be freaking nasty. It had to stop. I guess we have the ultimate power. It'll dry up and go away if we stop reading and posting.

Before the nastiness started, it was such a great high-level place to talk about the local media scene.

Re: Someone wasn't happy at Nexstar...who cares what he thinks?

Yeah, a "behind the scenes person..." most likely from my former station. I have a strong idea on who that person in question is. My suspect is a total boob anyway...always looking for attention...like he's the Golden Boy of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton market. Puh-leez. The guy needs to go find a life. I would be happy to lend him a quarter so he could go buy one. There were no problems when folks on that board were bashing Frank Andrews (that topic lasted several weeks). There were no problems people were bashing Diane Lee. There were no problems when people were being critical of WNEP. As soon as this "behind the scenes person" is mentioned, a threat of a lawsuit pops up. Give me a break.

Well the initial posts written by "Howard" were somewhat under control. It's the comments that pretty much were out of control. Continue without comments. I'm sure people will still read it.
