Something about 102.5

I noticed on the classic hits 103.9 that there is a mention of OSU baseball on "The games will broadcast on our broadcast partner's station WCVZ 102.5 (Highway 102) out of Zanesville. This station can be heard all over the metro Columbus Area so you wont miss a pitch!"

not sure it means anything, but i also noticed this week that the WHOK's 102.3 translator is off the air now as well.

Hmm, that *is* odd, especially the way it was worded... Direct link:

Dose this mean there is a LMA in affect with NABCO or there one in the works with them?

Noticed last week Wilks has applied to move it's translator from 102.3 to 94.1 because of "CONSEQUENCE OF INTEREFERENCE TO FULL-POWER STATION".
Since it appears that Wilks is admitting the the FCC that their translator on 102.3 is/was interfering with the new 102.5 move-in, that would explain why Wilks
relinquished broadcasting rights on the 102.3 frequency. The 102.5 move-in began on October 4, so it has taken Wilks a pretty long time to terminate the
use of the 102.3 frequency for their WHOK translator station. This should also help the 102.1 LPFM stations in Columbus.

Here is the application they filed with the FCC:

https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...xt=25&appn=101360122&formid=349&fac_num=72310

Exhibits Exhibit 1
Description: REQUEST FOR WAIVER

THE APPLICANT RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS A WAIVER OF SECTION SECTION 74.1233(D)(2). THE INSTANT DISPLACEMENT APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED AS A CONSEQUENCE OF INTEREFERENCE TO FULL-POWER STATION. THE APPLICANT WAS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY A SUITABLE ALTERNATIVE CHANNEL WITHIN THE ADJACENT FIRST, SECOND OR THIRD CHANNELS. AS A CONSEQUENCE, THE INSTANT APPLICATION QUALIFIES AS A MAJOR CHANGE. ACCORDINGLY, THE APPLICANT RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS A WAIVER OF SECTION 74.1233.

I dont think it means an LMA or anything. I think they just happened to want to sell the baseball to a bigger audience with a better signal so they took the jump at likely giving 102.5 a little cash in exchange for air time.

I also found this kinda humorious on 1039's website :
Studio:
(5p-6p only)
[614.821.1039]

At least they admit their not local outside of 5-6p!

I know not many posters will agree with me, but if Saga doesn't end up with 102.5 (and I doubt they will), a good scenario would be for Nabco to snag it and move their rock-based Classic Hits from 103.9 to 102.5.

This is veering off topic, but one of my dream scenarios for Columbus radio (and I'm sure it will remain a pipedream) is for Bonneville to come to town.  They do the best music radio out there.  GREAT, top-ratings stations, in Chicago, St. Louis, Cincy, Salt Lake, and more.  (Their talk stations also get great ratings, although that's definitely not my personal cup of tea.  So if they did somehow end up here, they would probably do talk  :()

If Wilks is claiming "fill-in service" by using this translator, why not have a booster (WHOK-FM1)? I'm not an engineer, so forgive me if this is an elementary engineering question.

no doubt ... a 10 watt booster on channel downtown is they need. if they plan on the 94.1 translator..and it starts to bleed all the freq's around like the one 102.3..i'm filing an fcc complaint.

They do boosters a lot in Salt Lake City. That's about the only place I've been that uses them extensively due to terrain.

I have a booster, in the Ohio Valley--it only works because of rough terrain.

Very difficult to engineer in pool-table country (i.e.: Franklin County); there is always going to be somewhere where the two signals tear each other to pieces.

I did extensive booster testing for WHOK back in 1990 and 1991 when Bill France owned the station. We actually put up three different booster sites with varying power levels. Because of the relatively flat terrain between the main transmitter and downtown Columbus, we could not get the zone of interference small enough to make it viable. We ruined too much territory with it. We used the best equipment to syncronize the signals and still had too much objectionable interference in places like Groveport, Grove City and the north outerbelt. We concluded that the translator was the much more viable option.

I knew someone somewhere would be able to answer that question. Thanks, Mark! ;D

Did you file the complaints with the FCC? Maybe that's why they vacated 102.3. This is why they left 102.3:

https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...xt=25&appn=101363219&formid=910&fac_num=72310

They(Wilks) now have a CP to move WHOK's silent translator(102.3) to 94.1.

The process is still on hold as Franklin (Saga) has filed a Petition for Reconsideration putting the CP on hold again

http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/leg_det.pl?Application_id=1360122&File_number=BPFT-20100318AAF

Note, the FCC turned down Franklin (Saga) first request to deny WHOK's translator move to 94.1 FM. The FCC then granted a CP for 94.1 with the
condition that if it causes interference to WSNY, it will correct the interference problem or leave the air. Here is the letter from the FCC to Saga:

http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=22206

Also, note, Franklin (Saga) recommended an alternate frequency of 102.1 for the translator. The FCC turned that down because it would cause
interference to WCRX-LP on 102.1.

As long as the Translator is properly tuned it should not cause any interference to Snoo err Sunny 95. Considering it's on the SAME tower as Sunny it's unlikely there will be much interference if the translator is properly tuned.

Ha ha, too bad, Saga! ;D

Wonder if Wilks will take a cue from CC and have such a nail-spitting mad-on at Saga over this that they take WHOK Soft AC and keep it that way for 7+ years despite consistently-anemic ratings? Or maybe even WLVQ? The never-ending debacle that is 93.3 suggests that revenge-driven format selection may be an overwhelmingly important priority for some local managers.

Who said Wilks is changing formats? This is about a translator.

93.3's illogical soft/mainstream AC format is rumored to exist mainly as revenge against Saga for trying to thwart some CC plans via FCC petitions years ago. The parallel here is that Saga was recently trying to thwart some Wilks plans. No, I don't actually believe Wilks is going to change formats over this, or for any other reason -- I just can't resist any opportunity for a dig at 93.3.

There are a few things that are GUARANTEED in life.
The sun rising in the east. Taxes. Coming to Radio-Info and seeing Nu_Roo complaining about 93.3's AC format in nearly every single thread.

We get it. You don't like AC on 93.3
Obviously someone does or they'd change it to something else. Obviously they make money with it, or they would change it to something else!
This thread had NOTHING to do with 93.3 and you brought it up AGAIN!

I'm not trying to start a war here, but GET OVER IT! If this were facebook, 50 people would click 'like' on my post!
