Something big going to happen at K-Hits

They are broadcasting promos that says that "something big is going to happen" at 12 noon Tuesday (9/5). Any guess at what it could be?

Well, as a fan I hope it isn't a new format. STLMedia is speculating a flip to country, but I can't imagine that.

I'm hoping they simply modify the way they do the Classic Hits format. Right now, they play about 1000 songs, and the Arch is eating their lunch with variety.

I think K-Hits could quadruple the number of classic rock songs they play, and use more of a Jack-FM approach while staying in the confines of Classic Rock.

I'd really dig that. But we shall see.

I'll betcha Moving is coming. Emmis just launched it on 93.9 in LA(with Rick Dees)

Just heard it and went to their website.....K-Hits says that they will not play the same song twice in a week......I think they are going against the Arch and the River......

Well, we are both right.

As I said, KHITS now has expanded their playlist fourfold, which for me is wonderful.

River flipped to Movin'.

Funny enough too...
Movin101.1 is Bonneville not Emmis.
Emmis looses out on another format guru in STL.
First the Arch and now Movin.
Emmis... smooth jazz is calling... and it is calling 105.7

Smooth Jazz is a tough sell. In the markets where it works (revenue wise, not ratings wise) the same cluster usually also has an urban station, and presents both stations to advertisers in tandem.

It's going to be difficult to bundle with Kshe and Khits.

If I was Emmis, I'd leave 105 alone, or pay the bucks to get Opie and Anthony.

My thing is, if you can bundle FM talk with three rock formats, you CAN sell Smooth Jazz. It couldn't be that much more difficult. What Emmis-St. Louis should do is get rid of K-hits and combine that sound with K-She and put Smooth Jazz on 96.3. That way you would have your rock sound with The Point and K-She and your more adult listeners would go to 97.1 and 96.3.

Hrmmm...

Spoken like someone who doesn't listen to either KHITS or KSHE. You just don't get it, they are very different audiences.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I don't work at Emmis, but you are talking about blowing up my favorite radio station, which bills very well for Emmis, and replace it with a smooth jazz format that has not billed well in the market in the past (see KNJZ; WSSM.)

I'm an over 40 year old male. No matter how much "combining" they would try to do with KSHE, they'd lose me, and the rest of their core listeners, because we don't care for the new stuff that is on KSHE. Additionally, adding even more classic rock to the mix on KSHE would push the younger demos away.

Smooth Jazz is very difficult sell. Talk radio is not. KFTK does not need to sold in tandem with anything.

Emmis would be foolish to give up on KHITS, and I'm sure that they would not. The core audience is too desirable, and if they did blow it up someone else would flip to Classic Rock in a heartbeat.

Spoken like a TRUE St. Louisian!!!! Someone who doesn't like or want change and wants to stifel anyone that does. That's why I left STL. Well Alex, I am under 40 and it is understandable that you like what you like, but don't keep others from wanting something different. It is time to appeal to a NEW demo and there are those of us who DO like Smooth Jazz. Not everyone wants to hear Rock all of the time, I don't care if it is on K-HITS or K-SHE. For once, Emmis-St. Louis needs to appeal to a different demo for once. Stop living in the past alex AND Emmis-STL!!!!!!!!

I have nothing against someone trying Smooth Jazz. However it is foolish to blow up a profitable, highly rated station with a unique format to do it.

Or better yet, listen to Smooth Jazz on Satellite Radio, or on the internet, or make your own CD's. It won't sell in St. Louis, bottom line. Classic Rock sells, so it's staying. Watch KHITS go up in the ratings now that they have expanded their playlist.

If anyone is going to switch to Smooth Jazz in town, it's going to be a station that is suffering for revenue. KIHT-FM isn't the one.

I forget, STL is still a dinosaur market that still listens to Classic Rock.

The latest edition of R&R has an article about selling Smooth Jazz. The format does better in revenue when it has it's own seperate sales department that understands the strengths of the format. When Smooth Jazz is sold as part of a cluster it tends to do poorly.

You're a goofball.

Classic Rock does well in most markets in the USA. Look it up.

Good. If you aren't intelligent enough to realize that Smooth Jazz is a loser format financially, then you have nothing to offer this city.

Later!

What a joke!!! I have nothing to offer STL. STL has nothing to offer me (and most young professionals).
Maybe if St. Louisians didn't have that "don't let the door hit ya, where the good lord split ya" attitude (like you Alex B.) MAYBE STL would actually be a world class city!!!
There is more to life than K-Hits and the Cardinals!!!!
There are those of us who LIKE different music and don't want to hear the same rock songs over and over. Thank God I have WNUA (a SUCCESSFUL smooth jazz station).
Alex, there is a world outside of STL, realize that!!!!!

You think all St. Louis has is K-Hits and Cardinals? LOL.

I've lived in several cities in my life (radio career, you know) and St. Louis is a world class city.

Now, since you don't like St. Louis, go whine in some other forum.

For you to classify STL as a world-class city (WHICH IT ISNT) where have you lived, Des Moines, Iowa and Jackson, Mississippi?
Oh, and I am not whining I am just stating fact about STL. I guess the truth hurts.
