Something Decent on Cartoon Network for a Change

Ohhh I can't wait! I hope this means Looney Tunes will be shown more regularly on TV again. I don't think Looney Tunes have been shown on CN or Bomerang for a long time. I'm not sure why. Maybe to sell more DVD sets in this age of Youtube?

With a start date of January 1, one would imagine. Such New Year's Day marathons usually serve as precursors to a show's regular timeslot on the station's schedule.

When my kids were little we all watched Looney Tunes every night on TNT. Darn it, I gave my 1-year-old grandson a Looney Tunes DVD for Christmas...at least one more generation of my family is going to enjoy them, period!

Wasn't Nick the last one to air Looney Tunes? Thats what I remember. Nick also used to air Peanuts back in the day too.

For whatever reason, after Time Warner bought Turner, they wanted the rights to all the Looney Tunes, as certain channels (ie ABC) had the rights to certain shorts. Afterwards, Cartoon Network airing them earlier this decade and then, for some reason, they just disappeared.

For that matter, I don't know why Looney Tunes left the schedule when Tom and Jerry shorts still air. Is there really that much of a difference in content between old Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes?

Looney Tunes had a dozen or so major characters whereas T&J had only two. The subject matter of LT was also varied compared to the cat vs mouse theme of T&J. LT was aimed at adults and had themes taken from areas kids wouldn't necessarily understand.

IMHO, T&J didn't come close.....nor did any other cartoon series.

From what I've read, although Time Warner bought Turner, it is still operated as a separate division from other TW networks. The Turner Broadcasting division owns Tom & Jerry, along with other MGM cartoons, and also the pre-1948 Looney Tunes, while TW owns the post-1948 LT's. There is really no reason why CN couldn't have shown the pre-1948 LT's all along, other than they were possibly refusing to show them because of not being able to make a deal with TW to show the post-1948 LT's. Hopefully that's been settled now.

I hope this is the first step toward getting LT's back on a regular basis. My 5 year daughter loves Tom & Jerry on CN and she loves what LTs she has seen on my videos. I can't wait for her to get to see LT's more regularly. ;D

As an aside, the channel will also be airing "King of the Hill" daily starting 1/1 as part of their "Adult Swim" lineup.

Yes, it seems it's a permanent addition. Per the Adult Swim website, they'll be running just one or two more hourlong blocks of The PJs, but it will permanently be added to the Sunday night lineup in 2009.

While they apparently plan to only show one episode per week, at least it'll be a reliable timeslot, and a good way to freshen up their off-TheWB cartoon lineup.

I don't see Looney Tunes on the schedule after today. Guess it is just a special airing just once a year. That sucks if thats the case. They should cut that stupid Adult Swim and air Looney Tunes more. Thats what I watched when I was a kid. The good cartoons not the crap on Cartoon Network today.

Now when is Disney going to show old shows of Mickey Mouse cartoons. Im not sure if toondisney airs them as I don't have digital cable.

Man it was great seeing those cartoons again. I wish they would show them more often!

To answer the previous questions Disney shorts are also lost to TV. Toon Disney used to air blocks of them but that was more than five years ago. :(

It is to bad that Disney, Nick, and Cartoon Network all made digital cartoon channels to show the classic cartoons they showed so the main channel can show new cartoons. But they don't need to dump all the classics. Well if you want to see some classic cartoons their on youtube.

I'd guess that if LTs are broght back on a regular basis it will be more likely to be on Boomerang. Incidentally, my daughter is hooked! ;D I managed to tape most of the marathon and she can watch them that way until they're back in whatever form. ;D

Damn it...I wish that I checked this board more often. I had no idea about this marathon until now...3 hours after it ended in my time zone :-[
