Something in the Air

I just finished a book by Marc Fisher titled "Something in the Air." It is a history of Top 40 Radio since WW II. I highly recommend it, especially for younger guys like myself who don't have a conept of the "glory days" and creation of Top 40 and FM.

Which got me thinking... I am curiuos about the history of Indianapolis radio. Does anyone know of a book detailing the history of Indianapolis/Indiana radio?

The only book I know of is a book that WFBM (now WRTV) released in 1964 and then updated later in the 60s called,"From Crystal to Color." The book is essentially a book about WFBM, but also traces radio's beginning in Central Indiana through the advent of television. (Time-Life owned WFBM TV-6, WFBM AM-1260,
WFBM FM-94.7 and Muzak at the time of the release, FCC rules split the stations when T-L sold them in the early 70s.) I don't think there are any difinitive books on Indy radio beyond the 60s. There have been various articles wriitten over the years, but no long form examination. Maybe somebody can find Mike Ahern to write a book about it.

Indiana Historical Society published a book on Indiana radio history a few years back. Has some pretty interesting information. You might check with them to see if copies are still available.

Found in a closet:

"In The Public Interest" Oral Histories of Hoosier Broadcasters

Published by the Indiana Historical Society in 1999.
