i was talking to a source at a certain station that recently flipped formats (sorry for being generic, just don't want to get anybody in hot water), and i asked him some things about the fm talk format on 97.1 and he told me that how the previous format had "just under one million listeners" and how the top 40 format has "just under three million listeners"...so finally i asked this source about the return of the fm talk format to the airwaves, he told me "if a move like that were to be made, it would be made before summer is over" and i asked him what that meant, and he told me the exact same thing again then he told me "that is the answer to your question"...i don't know if that is a message or what. what do you guys think?
 
Not going to happen.
FM Talk is one of the most expensive formats to run. That's one of the reasons CBS turned KLSX into Top 40. The station didn't have enough listeners to match up to the cost of the radio station. KLSX uses way less money than it did right now for AMP than it did for FM Talk and it gained almost 3 times as many listeners. Think of it business wise and also think about demos. CBS already has a good male adult demo. It owns Jack, it owns KROQ, it owns K-Earth...these stations target the same demo that FM Talk did. So why not try to reach out to more demos to make some money from these demos. Clear Channel dominates the female and family demos with KBIG, KOST and KIIS. This was a perfect move for CBS.

KLSX survived as long as it did because of Howard Stern. It didn't matter how many listeners KLSX had in the rest of the day but as long as it still had the listeners in the AM drive from Howard Stern, it was all good because Stern was #1 in English mornings. We all knew that KLSX was doomed after Stern left and it was a shame that CBS tried the Free FM format on a nationwide scale when it didn't know that all the people wanted was Howard. So if some radio company (not necessarily CBS) starts up FM Talk in LA again, all we can say is good luck, you're gonna need money to make a station like that a success.

how long do you think before individual hosts are brought back on the air? such as leykis, or conway jr.? carolla seems into his tv stuff right now...

Leykis is still under contract with CBS for a while meaning he's getting paid to do nothing. If he joins along with another radio station right now, he'll be in a breach of contract unless he works something out with CBS. Same thing with Carolla right now. He's getting paid until the end of the year although he's still doing his podcast. (BTW, the podcast is not affiliated with CBS in anyway)Tim Conaway Jr. is doing some stuff with KNX, KFWB and KFI. They're mostly specialty and fill in talk though. Frosty, Heidi and Frank are still on the podcast but I'm not sure if they're still on the payroll wagon for CBS...
There's a good possibly that you won't see these hosts for a good while. There are no formats currently looking these sorts of talents.
