Saga Launches 102.9 The Hog In Milwaukee
August 16, 2005

At 10 A.M. CT this morning, WLZR "Lazer 103"/Milwaukee officially became 102.9 The Hog. The station has applied for the new call letters, WHQG, which will be effective this Friday.

The format shift to an upper end Rock station covering the gambit from the '70s, '80s, '90s and today was ushered in by Lazer 103 morning staples, Bob & Brian, who filled the audience in on what the could expect from their new Rock station. The first song played on The Hog was Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold."

Sounders are also being run between songs, hailing the arrival of the newest player in the crowded Milwaukee Rock radio arena "A station designed by guys, for guys..."; "No rules, just Rock"; "If you're high on Rock, you'll be high on The Hog."; "If you're not squealing, you're not rockin'."

Core music on The Hog will be comprised of artists such as Aerosmith, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, Rush, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Tom Petty, Foreigner, Queen, Guns N' Roses and such contemporary artists as Pearl Jam, Nickelback, Metallica, and Green Day.

A message on the station's Web site reads: "What if you could build a radio station from scratch? We bet you’d put on the most listened to morning show in Milwaukee, and you’d play a LOT of ROCK. You probably wouldn’t limit it to just a decade. Face it, there’s a TON of great stuff to play from the 70s, 80s, 90s, right on up to today. Why not go Hog wild and play it all? Lots of songs every hour….in big, fat, juicy slabs of ROCK. It’s the Head Hog here, and before you go thinkin’ I’m a few ribs short of a full rack, lemme tell ya what we’re up to on 102.9 FM here in Milwaukee.I know a lot of you are fans of Lazer, and you really should give 102.9 THE HOG a try. We’re on a mission. We’re out to change rock radio in Milwaukee for the better, and to do that, well, it means more than just shuffling a few songs in and out of the station’s library. Instead, we’ve set out to pick out great rock and roll to fit with our great morning show, Bob and Brian. Not just one decade, we’re gonna play EVERYTHING THAT ROCKS. Yep, all that “radio rocket science” really comes down to a simple sentence. Milwaukee’s new 102.9 THE HOG, will play full racks of EVERYTHING THAT ROCKS all day and night, along with Bob & Brian mornings. I’m busy in the Hogpen right now putting a whole bunch of rock in the library that we know you’re gonna love hearing on the radio again. Do me a favor and hit me back with an e-mail and help me stock up our studio/barn with songs you wanna hear. Just e-mail me at [email protected]. Use that e-mail address to reach out to me and let me know what you think of Milwaukee’s new radio station, or give us a squeal on the Swine Line at 414-HOG-1029. We’re Hogs about rock. And now you can be too! Tell your friends about the 102.9 THE HOG. - The HeadHog"

"The appeal of the artists and 'Everything That Rocks' will finally sync up with the adult appeal of the long time Bob & Brian appeal," says WLZR President/GM Tom Joerres. "Abandoning the dedicated Active Rock position while tripling our library while still playing only the best New Rock gives us an unparalleled breadth of music."

"The Hog is about playing everything that rocks -- a wide variety of Rock from AC/DC to Nickelback and a significantly larger selection of music," says Saga EVP of Programming Steve Goldstein. "Broader music, and a fresh irreverent attitude are part of putting the sizzle back into Milwaukee radio. We love the smell of a new radio station."

102.9 The Hog Program Director Keith Hastings comments, "Radio listeners' expectation of Rock radio has changed immensely in recent years. 102.9 The Hog addresses and meets those new expectations with a brand of radio that features a broader spectrum of Rock music than most have grown to expect, highlighted by a lot of 'ear candy' between the songs."

The station is currently jockless outside of AM drive. Afternoon host Sean "Fish" Fisher is being "fitted" for morning duties at another Saga station.

It can also be revealed that longtime Lazer 103 midday host Marilynn Mee will be shifting over to Classic Rock sister, WKLH for similar duties. Mee fills a hole left by WKLH middayer Patti Genko who left that daypart in June to devote more time to her side business. Audra Evans has been filling-in in her absence.

Of Mee's arrival at 'KLH, PD Bob Bellini told FMQB, "I am really excited to have someone with Marilynn's caliber of talent and knowledge of the market. She knows Milwaukee like the back of her hand. She brings so much Rock credibility and musicology to our presentation. It's a real win-win."

Mee's first day at WKLH is expected to be tomorrow.

I doubt 98 Rock would shift to an eclectic rocker (or a Jack-type rocker), like WXRK in NYC, KDKB in Phoenix, The Hog in Milwaukee or Q95 in Indianapolis.

Like it!!! EXCEPT...Bob & Brian in the morning. C'mon...let's get off the morning shows named after two guys. Soon that will be sooooo trite and stale. Get creative! Call it SOMETHING other than Bob & Joe, Ralph & Pete, Susie & Sharon, Jerry & Kramer, Elaine & George, how un creative can you get!!!!

Good point. Since it's the "HOG", they should call it "The Arnold Ziffel Show".
I'm sure the guys will really "ham it up". (Stop me now before I hurt myself)<P ID="signature">______________

Ok....well.....why ? Yeah, of course they will resist that move, but if the numbers don't improve, that would seem the logical direction. WHPT is now doing the ''tradtional classic rock'' thing.....and 97X is topping 98 doing the ''new rock'' thing, with a lesser signal. In the future.....if 101.5 ever dies out, you've got that possibility of 97X moving there, and that would certainly indicate a change at 98 rock for sure, assuming the current numbers don't improve.

Personally, I'm a 35 Year old male.....I find this new ''eclectic rocker'' format (if you want to call it that) very listenable.....and not just a few min. listenable, it's a good library, good mix....some 70's classics, good does of 80's hard rock and all the best of the 90's.....and even select new rock.....I said SELECT new rock. I can't stand a good deal of the new rock out, but some is good.

If you think about it, it's all music that 98 rock has played in the past, the music that they ''founded'' the station on. The 80's , the 70's hard rock numbers ....the 90's seattle stuff. It's a greatest hits of rock format, isn't it ? 98 rock is KNOWN as the station for that music....or at least it was.

The way I look at it, 98 rock owns that position......still. They need to make a move to go back a re-stake their claim as ''thee rock station'' Forget this new crap, you are fighting head to head with 97X , and it isn't working out.....and the music isn't worth it, let'em keep the bulk of it.

Lets bring back the old 98 rock....sort of, but even better, right ?

I think it could happen soon.

Listen Live to that format out of Milwaukee....former ''laser'' active rock

Hey, it does sound pretty good to me.

98 is better

I tuned and the Hog was playing REO Speedwagon followed by a similar band. 98 Rock is better.

Just get RID of that A-W-F-U-L morning show on 98. Bubba-lite and the idiot ain't workin'...

So...they would be a "Bone" clone, with a few 90's adds thrown in? Not likely, given the small numbers at the Bone, and the recent death of Thunder. More likely than not 98 Rock will continue as is (save for a few minor tweaks to shore up older demos), hoping The Big Boys gain an audience.

...and is Metallica still a "contemporary artist"??? Maybe if the only prerequisite is that they are still recording.....but then Aerosmith and Bon Jovi would also qualify.

Re: 98 is better

Euwwww, REO? I can always catch them at the next county fair if I wanted to hear that.
