On a couple of occasions, I took my rented car around to visit some friends and family while I was down here attending the Winter Music Conference. Playing with the dial, there were some current English dance tunes on the SPANISH station (Mega 94.9) But one thing that is sorely needed again down there....a current based dance/rhythmic radio station! :-[
Yes, I do know of the history with Party 93.1 and why they flipped (and it wasn't because dance failed, they just wanted bigger numbers after a rock station flipped). I am also completely aware about the HD-2 feed...but then again, who has a car stereo that takes in HD, let alone a rented car!
I DID venture outside of the Miami Beach madness of the Winter Music Conference and headed up into Broward County. When I've asked local residents (with them seeing my WMC badge not knowing what it is) what they thought about a current based dance outlet returning to Miami, the majority of people (these were just average regular folks, no clubbers) said yeah! Not that my "asking" is the indicator for a format to return to radio, but for appears to be a diverse region such as South Florida, a current dance station SHOULD return back on SD radio.
Could things be done differently? Sure. But for the region that it is, a current based dance music outlet (this time mixed with rhythmic and some CHR) should come back onto the Miami dial. I'm not anticipating that such a station will happen by WMC 2010, but at best we should start making noise for this. Dance doesn't work for every market but for South Florida, current dance music DOES make sense.
Okay...thoughts and slams! ;D
