SOMETHING NEW FROM THE AMP FOLKS...

In the words of the late Paul Harvey, "Now here's a strange...", Artist Media's South Bend ESPN outlet (1620) is now simulcasting U93FM in glorious mono. Anybody know the deal?

now how maNY TIMES HAS AMP dumped espn in south bend. if i was espn id just find a dfferent company to run there stuff or put an ultimatium stop dumping us every so often then putting them back on

As far back as I can remember, Artistic has kept ESPN Radio on consistently ever since they put it on the air. They've just shuffled it back and forth between 1580, 1620, and 1490 a countless amount of times.

Well...here's an update. After a couple of days of simulcasting U93FM...1620 is no longer on the air. No audio. No carrier. This has been going on for three days now. A contact has reported that AMP has not renewed their ESPN contract...and...has said, "we're simulcasting...and not sure what we will be doing with the station."

Well...the station is back on the air in the U93 simulcast mode. Today's South Bend Tribune Business column reports that AMP President Arthur Angotti says the simulcast is temporary and he is actively wanting to know what kind of format area residents would like. His email address appears at the end of the article.

So there you have it. Put on your consulting cap and help him out!

I vote for heavy metal polkas. Or just go green and turn in the license.

How about a format of TV show theme songs??

A new format: Artie screaming alternatively at employees he is firing, women he is doing, clients, or road rage victims.

I'll say chances are good that the station will alternate between simulcasting U 93 or whatever WZOW is doing these days just like they've done with their Lafayette AM. If they decide to program it, maybe South Bend will see a third (or is it fourth) coming of Love Songs or maybe Radio Hollywood.

In all seriousness, there's really nothing to do with an AM these days, especially when you already have two news/talk stations already in the market. Standards may do okay, but it wouldn't be a viable selling option. Oldies would be good but that's already being done elsewhere. Sports talk is really the only void in the market that stands a chance of working there, and it appears that's not an option for them.

Could they lease it to one of the area groups that owns a translator but doesn't have an "originating" station? This would be a way to do an AM > FM Tx.

Heck, if nothing else, could/would WFRN want it, to offer the Southern Gospel full time?

NewsRadio 960 WSBT is now doing promos mentioning their affiliation with ESPN. It will be interesting to note how they integrate ESPN into their 'broadcast day' as they continue to portray themselves as the "local news leader."

don't they portray themslves as the "local news and sports leader?"

Yes DTV, thank you - you are correct. My bad. They are also a wonderfully self-promoted "weather expert station" of sorts.

I was just wondering how they will coordinate local talk, local sports talk, ND sports, Miller and Ramsey satellite talk, and a multitude of other content (and now tied to ESPN in some fashion) and have a cohesive product.

They are a notoriously cluttered-sounding station.

there's a station in Ohio, I THINK it's one of Chris Roberts' stations (WERT MAYBE) that does other programming in the day, and ESPN radio all night, with promos and bumps all automated, and it works. If it fills the nighttime and it's decent coverage then hey I say go with it.

Alternative Polka and Tejano'''''....Mixed together in the radio blender...

No matter what they put on, it will fail unless they have a voice to connect to the listener. You can play all the canned music you want, but they need a jock who believes in the format and connects to the community. Now with that said, look at AMPs track record of keeping someone on staff for any period of time and do the math. My suggestion, sell the station and let someone else give it a try. AMPs had it's shot and it's the same thing over and over. Broekn promises and bad radio... and no I have never worked for AMP but have seen enough over the years to know how this will play out. :-\

What's a high-band AM worth in a market like South Bend these days? $50k? Less?
