Something Odd......

Could that perhaps have something to do with the fact that they are NOW all Hispanic?? Another Rout 81 genius move.

A risky move, but it could also be genius. Look at the ratings of most of the top markets (except Philly) and you'll see Spanish stations near the top. Granted, Carbondale and Scranton are not New York, but playing to the Spanish-speaking audience could be a loyal, long term investment. Time will tell... and the qustion is: how much time will Route 81 give this?

If they stick with their s.o.p. it's being reconsidered already. The history of this group is one of constant yet mindless change. Most of their key people in every department have left and been replaced by either beginners or bartered syndication. The real question is how long much longer will there be a route 81. Good sources indicate the money is drying up

WAZL is not all Hispanic. I was listening last night for a little bit and it was English.

Route 81 came in with a bang and seems to be going with a whisper now. When they started they were really gung ho about being local, local, local. They initially had about a 10 minute news segment in the morning and they actually would have someone reporting from the scene (usually Pat Ward). They even had someone that used to be on 16 in the afternoon doing news and the dj's were live and talked about local things happening all the time. Now their local news segment consists of about a 60 second spot from the same guy that does the news from their other stations seemingly reading headlines in the newspaper. (They do broadcast News 13 twice a day--one of the local stations in Hazleton).

It's as if Route 81 radio wanted to be local then realized, Oh My God, that costs money. Forget that. We'll voicetrack, get our news from the Standard Speaker and play lots of music instead. (I do like music, but I used to listen to WAZL when Route 81 took over because they actually had real local news). For a few short months, it did look as though real local radio was back. Such a shame.

Hmmm.....It could be a very good move. The entire area has a growing hispanic population, and for the most part no one is serving that audience. I don't think they were making any great amount of money on the former format, if they do at least as well, they haven't lost anything, if they do better, well..I think that would be success.

WAZL is not all hispanic, it seems that they have flipped WCDL. They must have simulcasted WAZL yesterday while they did the flip.

I don't think all Hispanic would work all that well in this area. Philadelphia tried it with the former Rumba 104.5 and it was gone within less than 6 months. Philly has a much larger Hispanic population and if they couldn't pull it off, I don't think NEPA can either. That being said, having Hispanic shows on a station may work. I believe WAZL has a Hispanic show (at least they used to) and at least in Hazleton they could try one a couple times a week (they have time in the evenings when I don't believe WAZL has any live hosts anyway).

I think it's interesting that most of the comments here have been negative. How many times have there been calls for radio stations to program "something different" on NEPA radio. Now one of the groups seems to have done something truly unique, and most of the comments say that they're foolish, or they're broke or they're desperate. Time will tell if they are successful or not. It's certainly not another cookie-cutter AC format or cookie-cutter country format. This really IS different. Maybe they should be applauded instead of made fun of.

Maybe that's because most of the comments are coming from people who, unlike the mismanagement obviously in place now at route 81 recognize the fact that there is a fine line between doing something different and doing something stupid.
