This is so strange I wish I had thought to grab my phone and shot a video to prove that I'm not a liar. Something very strange happened with the reception of 96.1 W241CG yesterday. We had 96.1 on yesterday morning. A Sony digital clock radio in the kitchen. Crystal Clear reception running their regular KOOL Radio format. 8:30AM comes. Time for the Italian Show. 96.1 goes to dead air for a few moments. (990 does too) and when 96.1 comes back it's all distorted. You can't tell what's being broadcast. - Not the first time they've had issues on 96.1 with the Italian Show. So I check 990 and they're running the Italian Show as normal. I switch back to 96.1 and it's still messed up. I turn the radio off. I grab my Walkman. It's on 96.1 and it's playing Italian Music. I put the radio in the kitchen back on and 96.1 is still messed up. I'm like "What the heck?" I turn it back off.
90 minutes go by. My Mom and I are about to go out to run errands. We always turn the radio on in the kitchen while no one's home. 96.1 is still messed up. She puts the radio onto 100.5 and we leave the house. I have my Walkman with me and I turn it on and 96.1 is on playing Italian music. We get into the car. Car radio comes on 96.1 is playing Italian Music. Not understanding Italian we switch the radio to 94.7 (that's my Mom's number 3 station to listen to).
It's 12:45PM when we get home. I switch the kitchen radio back to 96.1 and sure enough it's still messed up. Meanwhile I sit down on the couch to read. I have my Walkman on. 96.1 is on playing Italian music all the while the kitchen radio is also on 96.1 all messed up. I turn the kitchen radio off. I turn my Walkman off. About 10 mins to 2PM Mom goes down the street to visit a neighbor. Nothing good on the TV. I turn the kitchen radio back on. 96.1 is still all messed up. I turn my Walkman back on. And 96.1 is on and running the Lutheran Church Mass. (As is normal). I turn my Walkman off and sit there reading with the kitchen radio still on 96.1 which messed up. At 1:57PM KOOL Radio comes back on 96.1. Crystal Clear reception! Needless to say my mind is blown by this.
Still can't figure out why the kitchen radio did not like the Italian Show and Church Mass. When I could pick them up on my Walkman and on the car radio.
BTW, totally unrelated, but 96.1 always goes back to KOOL Radio a few minutes before 990 does. I don't know anyone at Full Power Radio any more, but I think the use an internet connection to feed the Italian Show and the Church Mass from 990's Studios on Old Turnpike Road to 96.1's studios in Glastonbury. I've always noticed that the Italian Show and Church Mass aren't as clear on 96.1 as it is on 990. I think for the KOOL Radio format they have a computer set up up on Old Turnpike Road that plays the music and a computer in Glastonbury that plays the same music on 96.1 FM. They must have them synced very well because I never notice any delay between 990 AM and 96.1 FM. They must do this as several times when there has been no power on Old Turnpike Road and thus 990 is off the air the KOOL Radio format continues uninterrupted on 96.1 FM.
