Something up in Charleston?

From AllAccess.com

So what is up in CHARLESTON, SC ... and can CITADEL be planning a format flip?

Currently its AC WSUY (SUNNY 96-9), is running promos urging listeners to switch to itsTop 40 sister WSSX (95-SSX), with details tomorrow morning.

Keep it tuned to ALL ACCESS as we find out if this is just a stunting, or an actual format switch.

Personal note....When you go to the Sunny969.com website, it goes directly to 95SX, so obviously 96.9 is flipping. But to what? And when you go to 95sx.com, it says we welcome 96.9 listeners.

if "Sunny" indeed flips, I bet WXLY will shift to from Gold to Mainstream AC.
Someone would have to fill the void...

Any guesses what a format would be? Rock/Alternative? The market seems to have pretty much everything else that works in radio these days.

Something interesting is that the MD of 96Wave.com has left for "bigger things". Read that off of AllAccess today too. But I doubt it has anything to do with 96.9

That's a big possibility Rick, which I had expected for a while, just not THIS soon. then again, isn't 107.5 going on the air soon in Cola?

Both 95SX & Sunny 96.9 are Citadel stations, so why are they telling all the 96.9 listeners to change over to 95SX?

Was Sunny 96.9 up for sale? (APEX now owns WXTC 1390AM which was a Citadel station.)
IS SX's morning show doing bad and they're trying to get more listeners?
Is SX's music going to change? With them telling listeners to switch, I doubt some of them want to hear Britney Spears, Fall Out Boy, Soulja Boy, etc. Sunny's listeners are probably twice (probably even triple) the age of SX's listeners.
Is this a joke with Elton John coming to town and 96.9 will be playing nothing but Elton until then.

(I guess no early start on the Christmas music after Halloween this year.)

Right now on WSUY, they're running promos that inform the listeners to switch to sister station WSSZ (95SX). They talk mostly about the morning show ang several big money contests and promotions that 95SX is currently running. The link below includes one of them, which I recorded off their online stream.

The sound quality isn't the world's greatest, but it's the best that I could do. Also, you can still listen to the Sunny 96.9 online stream here:
http://www.sunny969.com/homepage.asp
Note: Free membership required, but that membership give you access to over 180 online radio streams from North American radio stations, which could be usefule to those of you who get your airchecks from online sources.
Enjoy the aircheck!

Answer 1: Because 96.9 is no longer going to be Sunny (or an AC station, probably). Encouraging listeners to move to a sister station is a smart move. It helps improve the ratings for the other station (95SX)

Answer 2: I suspect 95.1 will probably move towards a middle-of-the road hot AC station.

My assumption is that Cat Country will simulcast on 107.5 and 96.9 for a spell and 107.5 will move to Cola by Dec. 1. Cat Country goes on 96.9 and gives WEZL a serious run for its money.

Another possibility is that Citadel could put modern rock/AAA on 96.9 (a la Star 98.7 in LA or KSCF in San Diego). This would be the death knell for 100.5.

Anyhow...I gotta work 11pm-7am tonight so I'll be out at my car listening to the format switch at 6 or whenever.

Radio-X

For those of you who are interested, here's the format flip from soft rock Sunny 96.9 to country 96.9 The Wolf:

Again, I apologize for the quality of the audio. This was recorded off the former Sunny 96.9's internet stream with a microphone in front of my speakers. I am unsure of what happened at any of the other stations in the area. Oh, for those of you who were wondering...

Last 5 Songs on Sunny 96.9
5. Brass In Pocket (I'm Special) - The Pretenders
4. How To Save A Life - The Fray
3. H o n k y Cat - Elton John
2. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The Police
1. She's Always A Woman - Billy Joel

First 5 Songs on 96.9 The Wolf:
1. Play Something Country - Brooks & Dunn
2. Callin' Baton Rouge - Garth Brooks
3. Something More - Sugarland
4. Don't Blink - Kenny Chesney
5. My Town - Montgomery Gentry

And there you have it. Hope it helps. Enjoy!

And apparently 95SX did shift back to Hot AC.

From AllAccess.com

Market insiders are hearing a slight shift in the music on Top 40 WSSX, with artists like KANYE WEST, 50 CENT and SOULJA BOY no longer in the mix as they "welcome former SUNNY listeners."

That looks right. I was on yes.com and did a search in WSSX's log for the first day of the flip for Sunny and 95sx played no hip hip. No T-Pain Buy You a Drink, or that song Party Like A Rock Star. But 95sx did play Summer Love by Justin Timberlake with T.I. and The Way I Are by Timberland. I don't think if those songs should be played for a Hot AC.

My 2 cents on the flip. I think they should of flipped WSSX to country. 95.1 The Wolf and leave Sunny 96.9 alone. This as Sunny has went up in ratings and also Y 102.5 has went down some. Also for Christmas who is going to compete with Y 102.5 with Christmas Music? Sunny 96.9 always did. Now theirs a void in the Charleston market for AC. Who I think should fill that void is Apex with 96.1 once they move it to 101.7 this as Chuck FM sounds soft like a AC during some songs. Maybe call it 101.7 Lite FM or even bring back Sunny and call it Sunny 101.7.

I thought 95SX was always the top dog against B92?

:-\{Clear Channel needs to bring back 94.3 THE BEAT(Rhy) or POWER 94.3(Urb). Does anyone in Chucktown party anymore???}

This almost reminds me of the early 90's all over again... 95SX was ac/hot ac while there was The Hot noise... Back then there was WEZL and a new station called Bubba 107.5... My oh my how things come full circle so maybe CC or what ever they will wind up and be may want to give the ole' format wheel a spin... CC1

So how much longer until 107 5 moves out of the market? It has to be soon, I don't see Citadel keeping two stations almost identical under the same roof for very long.

A few days before it's officially off the air in Chas, WNKT will probably run a loop directing listeners to 96.9.

That is my thinking...... The question is what will they do different with The Wolf than they did with Cat... I dunno what the breakdowns are for cat, but they were not setting the world on fire with their ratings 12+ that is... When I was visiting my parents back in August Cat was kinda boring sounding to be honest, but then again I only got to listen to them during the day... As for them making the move to Cola I am wondering if they will start mid November... stunt with Christmas music then launch a full CHR attack with get this "Live and Local jocks" and give NOK a real run for the money..... With NOK on auto pilot after JR Citadel could really put a whoppin' on NOK... JMO!!! CC1

Y102 just played the song 'Black Horse and the Cherry Tree' from 2005 or 2006 along with 'Breathe' earlier....I guess they're trying to pick up where Sunny left off..

Isn't Citadel going to leave Cat Country on 107.5 when moving to Columbia? Thats what I thought I read they are moving the whole station and format. Citadel wants to compete with Clear Channel's WCOS 97.5 I would say. So thats the reason Citadel flipped Sunny to Wolf so they can still compete with WEZL 103.5.

There are already two other country stations in the Columbia market: WWNQ and WWNU. Both haven't been making much headway, although collectively they did take WCOS down a few notches.
