Something We May Have Missed...

I was playing around on wikipedia and decided to search KBXX. Now i'm not sure if this is true (since this is wikepedia) but it did show The Box's first air date as April 2nd, 1991, which means The Box celebrated their 20th anniversary recently, even though nothing was mentioned on the air (not a surprise). Now they may not really be what they used to be a while back, but as a longtime listener (especially these days, but not a lot), i do appreciate the fact that they have been given us a home where we can get our hip-hop and r&b fix, especally these days as the only station doing that.

Happy belated 20th anniversary!!

Good catch, and you're right about it being twenty years this month. I'm not sure about the exact day of the switch (April 2nd 1991 was a Tuesday) but the call letters changed from KFMK to KBXX on 4/22/91.

Listened to KFMK right up to the switch and haven't listened to it since. But... even though it is not my preference of music I am glad that it has made it this far for those who like the music. Congrats on 20 years KBXX!!

The station continued using a simple "97.9 KFMK" in between every 3rd or 4th song. If you remember the old KFMK jingles, needless to say, it sounded quite odd to hear the mellow sounds of the old imaging followed by Ice Cube. It became known as "The Box" after the first week of the new format. For the life of me, I thought the flip was in 1990. Maybe I have KFMK and KNRJ (now KHMX) confused. They both changed, one not too far after the other.

Since we're talking 20 year anniversaries, I'll mention KKBQ-FM. Flipped in July of '91 from the Top 40 format it debuted with in 1982, to a short lived Top 40 Rock Hits format to Easy Country.

Was the calls actually KFMK? interesting that now KFMK is up in Austin as a religious music station.
