Something's Brewing...

Here's the bottom line reality:

Regardless of who heard what and whether what they heard was on HD2, a translator, or both, it must not have been making money or it wouldn't have been replaced.

Hard to say if it could have made money. They never sold ads, or monetized it in any way. I dunno, go figure.

A station with no advertising at all -- even bonus spots from buys of other stations in a market cluster -- is either there only as a placeholder while something else is being planned and finalized, or is horribly mismanaged.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I think it's a research project for Iheart. The alternative format was on for about 6 or 8 months, IIRC. It was a much tighter rotation than 94.7, and I suspect that they just wanted to see what it did. This new rock format is much harder than The Eagle - closer to 98.5 in terms of genre. But I haven't heard any currents - only classic rock. I haven't listened enough to tell if it's also tight rotation or not. But Iheart has news/talk, Country, Rhythmic, and Classic Hits (if that's what you call Jack). Nothing in the rock domain, and Sacramento's rock stations do well. So I can see them using this little signal to test a format & see if it gains any traction at all. If it does, we might find it on an under-performing class-B. Or they might leave it & try to sell ads. As much as I'd like to see a true format experiment (I.E. - AAA / Americana) on this frequency I don't think it's going to happen.

That's certainly a valid hypothesis. If you're going to experiment, why not do it on the HD2 or HD3 stream?

Classic Hits (if that's what you call Jack)

The industry calls it "Variety Hits". What the difference is, I'm not completely sure. "Classic Hits" is what "Oldies" stations became (think KRTH here in L.A. or the pre-2008 KFRC-FM up there in S.F.).

they started it up in Portland recently. Not sure how it's doing or what it's up against. They at least have some "live" jocks and a decent signal.

Portland is not "recent". The flip from Oldies KQOL to Classic Rock KFBW took place May 8, 2009 and was actually the first "Brew" station.

What was then Clear Channel had clones in Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Omaha, Seattle, Rochester, St. Louis, Seattle, Grand Rapids and Huntington WV by the end of 2013.

This is almost a "ho-hum" flip.

I only thought it was recent as I had not heard it before recently, that is all. My bad. I'm new to Iheart since october, so I'm just catching up on things. I don't pay a lot of attention to programming, as I'm an RF guy and take care of seven signals for them here in Sacto.

The error is understandable, Dave. Thanks for explaining your circumstances.

Around here, one never posts statements worded as fact if they're not 99.9% sure they are accurate. Someone will jump on inaccuracies in a heartbeat if you do. ;)

Consider me smacked upside the head. BTW, I like your 80's Channel. The whole Telecom act flowchart is pretty cool/sad also. I got caught up in it when Brown Broadcasting was bought out by American Radio Systems... It's all been sliding down a greased slope ever since. I sure miss the Brown's.

With Curtiss Johnson in charge of the Sacramento cluster and his history with KSEG and KRXQ, anything is possible. In other words we could see a Seattle-style shake up for either 93.1, 93.7, or 101.1, with 107.1 picking up one of the three formats that could get displaced, based on the domains that they just mysteriously registered.

Yeah, What about KZHP?

Is iHeart going to buy out the name K-ZAP & Shut 93.3 down?

There is nothing in the Rules that prohibit a commercial station from making a financial donation to a non-commercial station in exchange for them giving up call letters, format, whatever. The only rules that apply are from the IRS, which state that if the donor receives anything of value, the charitable value of the donation must be reduced by that amount.

I didn't realize Curtiss landed back in town at iHeart. Is John Geary still over there also?

KZHP-LP sounds great, they put out a nice sounding product with excellent air talent. Unfortunately its signal is really hard to pull in. I wonder if iHeart is talking with Process Theatre/KZHP about the 107.1 translator. KZHP has a pretty wide open AAA format; not likely iHeart would put this on one of their full market signals without some significant tweaks to make PPM friendly.

The Brew is decent, much harder than KSEG, but has a pretty tight playlist. I can't see iHeart blowing up any of their FMs except 93.1 for what I'm speculating a mainstream rock/AAA type format.

If they were really gunning for the call letters, contact Mapleton... Give them some money and be done with it and get the "real" KZAP call letters. They're just up the road in Chico. :)

As others have mentioned though, who gives a rip about call letters anymore.

Isn't 93.1 KFBK ? Is that I Heart? As far as "The Brew", I listen to 93.7 HD-2 in the car in Elk Grove. It does break up occasionally but is better than 107.1 in my area. I actually heard some paid spots on it the other night.

Yes, KFBK-FM is a iHeart station. If they're going to get the KZAP calls they should talk to Mapleton, but if that happens Mapleton will want something extra out of it. Plus we'll have to see what happens in the next PPMS before their fates are determined.
