Somewhere deep inside, theres a devil waiting to come out; And, It likes 2 dance

HALLOWEEN IS THIS WEEK  AND I WAS WONDERING:

ANYBODY HAVE PLANS?
ANYBODY HAVE THEORIES?

Is anyone going to be doing their traditional halloween music, mixes, or special halloween features, and using Michael Jackson's "Thriller"?

Does anybody have guesses to what, if anything, may happen in radio land the following week?
MIGHT KYOT MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEAR  ???

Is it too early to start thinking about Christmas music and what may be in store in 2011 in the world of radio? Will ALL the current stations even make it to Christmas time as they are now?

Somewhere, deep inside, there's a "devil waiting to come out"; And, it likes to dance...

...And when it happens, I have a feeling the result will cause some things to be shaken up in radio land. It's been a while since much has happened format-wise in Phoenix. BUT; Anything is bound to happen at any time... There are quite a few vulnerable stations out there haunting the airwaves. There are others who are seemingly "lost" and seem haunted amongst the "sea of sameness".

QUESTION IS:
WHO will survive through the remainder of the year into 2011? WHO will not? Can we manage another year with everything as is AND the new KQMR in its growing stages? Will anybody attempt to be a 90's channel? Will KFYI be MOViN to FM? Will Radio Disney somehow make news on these boards? Hmmm..... It's that time of year when anything can sneak up on you, and before you know it, the devil is dancing and you're all logged in talking about "that station did what?...I never saw it coming..."

Halloween is an awesome holiday but also a sad day as I remember Energy Arizona officially signing off at 5pm with enjoy the silence. Still miss the days of detour diva, pistol pete, lysa d and others jammin the dance. I wonder what the revenue is for The Beat vs what it was for Energy.

The Beat probably most likely has a higher cume and does better revenue-wise, due to the fact that they play more familiar, established hits.

Wasn't Halloween also when the "second coming" of 103.9 KPTY died? I remember I went to Atlanta late October then returned in December, called KZZP and asked "what happened to 103.9?" and was told they got bought. Then I asked "do you think there will be another station like 103.9?" (A dumb question based purely on wishful thinking and emotion) and the response was along the lines of "I HOPE NOT! They sucked. That's why you got us man...")

I doubt that a dance leaning rhythmic, or dance lean rhythm top 40 would fail today. It couldn't do any worse than some of the popular stations hanging out in the 2's or the 2 point somethings & higher in ratings. Maybe back when I was saying "dance is the future sound of music", it was probably still a LITTLE early, but... definitely not too early, NOW. The only "problem" with hypothesizing on any new type of rhythmic/chr style format are the amount of rhythmics and top 40 styles we already have. Hmmm... well maybe this will be another one of my predictions to come true. If you look at KIIS FM in Los Angeles, they still rule, but look at what they do on Friday nights - and like I've said in the Atlanta section with some criticism (right before a new station started doing what I suggested within the same month), I keep my wishes reasonable. One mixshow segment a week featuring mainstream dance hits with chr pop remixes sprinkled in, or at least some form of dance, would not hurt in Phoenix (as you can somewhat already see now). If anything did flip to be rhythmic dance, it would have to be from within the "already rhythmic sounding group".

Anyway, if anything were to flip in this completive market of Phoenix after Halloween, or between now and New Years, what would the new format be? It seems as if we're doing pretty well with the formats we currently have, and it's not like anyone is sitting in a room somewhere thinking "Oh gosh there's a hole in the phoenix market! Stop everything - we must invest & provide them with an Urban format immediately!". I'm not sure about a 90's channel in Phoenix..

BY THE WAY,
Where exactly is KQMR's antenna? I realized I can get them with static in BOTH Phoenix and Tucson. Somewhere in between the two places is when it seems to come in clearest. Also, do you think this station will blow up, or "get blown up" first - IF KVIB never flips?

Well The Devil may have to work a little hard, because

Things are actually so seemingly good that my hypothesis even failed to draw a sufficient amount of attention here!

There are holes in this market, but the difference is that the current economic situation makes for a rather cost prohibitive environment for a major format change or tweak. I would say, however, that the notion of KYOT becoming KFYI-FM does seem to make more and more sense... although the operating costs for that station are so low I don't see the suits at CC running to flip the switch on that one.

One correction: 103.9 didn't get bought; the old KEDJ sticks were bought and flipped, with Riviera buying the old Edge format and bringing most of the old staff to the 103.9 frequency.

The devil is dancing, now. Just waited until Christmas time instead of Halloween.

Well it's nice that he decided to show up in time for the holiday season. With the Christmas stunting currently going on at 97.5, any chance we could possibly see them flip to a Modern AC? They could aim for Mix exclusively by concentrating on playing the some 90's hits all the way up through the 2000's and Today. A dump off of the 80's music that Mix plays will make them different and a little more current. Just a thought!

For some odd reason, they changed from rhythmic ac - right when they were starting to slide up in ratings (which was around the same time I was beginning to heavily praise them about their sound on here)!

They DID sound more similar to KISS than Mix before the stunting began. Perhaps they are just planning to rebrand themselves as Hot 97.5...

We shall see.

With that name "HOT"... if they go with what the industry generally has done for that name it is:

Urban AC
Hip Hop
CHR/Dance

I am hoping for either Urban AC or CHR/Dance.. of course I lean more on the dance but really hope they just don't rebrand and they give us something fresh for 2011.

Will they use Tom Joyner in the morning, or... Steve Harvey? I don't think Elvis Duran will please the Urban AC crowd, but then again, that's just me. And, how well did Majik 107 do during it's time?

That could be true or (if they do decide to re-brand with HOT) it may be because it's easier to do.

Phoenix already has (or had):

Power
X
Y
Edge
Mix
Vibe
Party
Jamz
Energy
Mega
Kiss
Beat
Peak
Movin
Zone

I'm not sure if anyone has the rights to Amp, Now, or Fresh, but maybe HOT is generic enough and hasn't been used here. I don't know...

If I had a station, I'd call it Level FM and if it was a CHR, I'd hope it had a "level mix of music". ;D
