Song Information with Windows Media Encoder

Hey everyone,
I have been tasked with implementing streaming for our small stations and the word from the powers-that-be is that I need to use Windows Media Encoder. I am not trying to do anything fancy, just something small. I am using Windows Media Encoder and surprisingly, it was very little effort to get the software working. I have the encoded streaming going out and the whole setup appears to be working well.

The one thing that I have not been able to figure out is who to get song information to be pushed along with the encoded stream. So when the user has Windows Media Player (or similar software) listening to our station, the title and artist information will be displayed. I know there is information that can be entered for the station that is static but I need song information.

I have my streaming station at home running Shoutcast and it is working great but for this market, Shoutcast is not an option, the owner has some strange dislike for WinAmp (I didn't ask and he didn't tell me). We just upgraded our hardware and automation system to NexGen so there is little to nothing left in the way of budget money.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Jimmy,

I wondered about this too, as I also know someone who uses Windows Media for their stream and can't get the info to appear on it.

I use a piece of software from SpacialAudio.com called Simplecast. It allows streaming in a variety of formats including mp3, ogg and windows media. I know it has titling as part of the encoder - it may be worth a visit over to their site to see if the artist/title functions work with Windows Media (like you, I'm using Shoutcast for my personal oldies stream, CapitalRadio.us and haven't used WM at all).

I hope this helps. Let me know what you find out as I would like to pass it along to my engineering colleague with the same problem.

The cheap (free) way to get this done is to embed a web page inside the player with the current track info on the page. Windows Media Player doesn't support meta refresh tags on embedded pages though, so you would need a refresh button for the listener.

I use SAM (Also a SpacialAudio Product) and with some in-stream scripting, my Windows Media streams actually send a refresh command to the listener's player on a song change. So the embedded web page will reload itself automatically when told to by the in-stream script.

Hope this helps...
