Songs Played As Adverts Now?

I was listening to the Internet stream of KOY this evening when they played a song by Daughtry. I thought that was very unusual since KOY is billed as 'Nostalgia' and neither the time frame of the song nor the song itself fit the format.

When the song ended a spot announced that the song was "brought to you by Iheart radio" which I assumed to be an advert for both Iheart and the artist.

Are songs now being played as spots?

Internet streams usually do not carry the over-the-air commercial breaks of the station, but substitute net-only spots or PSA's. Apparently I Heart Radio fills some breaks with music. First I've heard of it.

I can't get KOY OTA down here in S. Tempe so I don't know what is airing for spots now but the last commercial I heard was an ad for a car windshield replacement company which airs quite often.

Clear Channel has about 10 songs per month I think that just pop on during random commercial breaks on all their IHeart Radio Streams....even some of that talk and spanish stations now  Doesn't matter the format of the station. Makes it very hard to listen online

I think it is a small price to pay to be able to listen to a favorite station I cannot otherwise receive.

I just thought it was unusual since I didn't remember hearing something like that before.

Whenever I listen to Radio 104.5 via iHeart, they tend to sometimes play a new song/artist that may end up on the station's playlist soon instead of most commercials. They used to play both new songs and older songs that for whatever reason have dropped off of the OTA playlist.

Even though I'm a huge fan of TuneIn, I am disappointed they now feature ads before your station plays, but only when you use their website. On their Phone apps it is fine. However, you won't find CBS or CC Stations on TuneIn. Those corporate monsters wanna make sure you use their apps instead (like iHeart and Radio.com) so they can spam you with their own ads.

CBS-owned news and sports stations are on TuneIn, except on Roku boxes.

And CC stations are on StreamS (an app competing with TuneIn)...not just on iHeartRadio.

But not CBS-owned music stations. No KROQ on Tune In. Huge middle finger to its target demo.

I didn't know CBS allowed only spoken word formats on TuneIn, but I doubt that's an interest to most TuneIn users. Why not music? Could it be because TuneIn allows you to buy the songs via Amazon and CBS wants to ensure they get that commission instead?

Maybe you should check before you post. I'm listening to KROQ on TuneIn now, and have KRTH, KTWV, AMP and Jack on my favorites list. And I put my favorites list together about a year ago.

And on StreamS, you can get all the L.A. CBS cluster stations, including the KROQ and KRTH HD-2 stations.

Interesting. I just streamed KZON and KOOL on there. Before, they would only show but would not play with a recording saying this channel is not available. Did they change that recently?

KZON and KOOL are locals for me, so I didn't try them. But I set up my L.A. favorites list a year ago and have listened to the stations frequently since. BTW, KNX is on both TuneIn and Streams and TuneIn includes the 93.1 HD-2 stream of CBS Sports Radio.

I simply used those examples as they were blocked about a year ago

They were blocked a year ago. They're not blocked today (I thought the CBS music stations still were). I'm listening to KROQ on my Android phone's TuneIn app as I write this.

I think it happened back at the NAB Radio Show. CBS is following the lead of Cox and others who are putting their streams on multiple platforms. Cox, for example, negotiated to put its streams on both I Heart and TuneIn. CBS saw the light that limiting their streams to their own platform wasn't doing them any favors.

No, KOY likely is blocking ads due to the whole AFTRA thing from years ago where they wanted "extra compensation" for vocal talent used in ads if aired online... So most stations cover ad breaks with PSAs, Promos, Web friendly commercials or in some cases even music.
