Songs That Don't Belong On (Certain) Stations

Correction:

AC/DC's "Flick Of The Switch" was in 1983...not '85.

Not that it matters.

BTW...they went into the studio two weeks ago.

...the record's done today and they're mixing.

THAT...is how it's done!

Here's another song which doesn't belong:

Jump Around by House Of Pain on either WAAF or WBOS! Most rap (with the exception of the Beastie Boys - I remember the late Sunny Joe White commenting that he regretted putting the Beasties on Kiss) fall under the rhythmic/disco umbrella, given that rap came from disco. (Rapper's Delight, anyone?) Using my Disco Vinnie (another talent lost far too soon) logic, Get Down On It (Kool & the Gang), Brickhouse (Commodores) or some other dance classic would have followed instead of VH, GNR, AC/DC, etc.

Jam'n is logically the only station which SHOULD be playing Jump Around IMHO! :)

Hey Steve, I am a little bit confused by your posting (which is ok, because I get confused a lot! ;D) Are you saying that Vinnie should have played the R&B songs mentioned or that the stations should have also excluded Rock instead?

Now why did Sunny Joe White say that he regretted playing The Beastie Boys? To the best of my knowledge, WZOU never played "Brass Monkey" but Kiss 108 did, not that I was listening to 'ZOU back in those days yet.

Somehow with House of Pain really being this Irish Group, they are not looped into the Alternative scene, even though they were never played by 'BCN, WAAF or 'FNX when they were currents.

And I agree, I think that House of Pain really only fits on Jam'n as well.

I was pointing out on his Eagle/Star Club Classics show, Vinnie Peruzzi played Jump Around surrounded by Brickhouse, Celebration, Rapper's Delight, etc. rather THAN GNR, AC/DC and that genre!

I remember that statement from one of Dean Johnson's Herald columns back around 1988 or so (and/or Norma Nathan's Eye columns) because Sunny had complaints about Fight For Your Right (Beasties) from longtime Kiss listeners who felt alienated.

Although if Kiss IS playing a lot of non-rock as many claim (I haven't listened since Ivey's overdoing it with alt-rockers like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, Green Day, Beck, Alanis, No Doubt and Hootie & the Blowfish back in '94), I think Jump Around could be at least a good weekend fit for Kiss as well as Jam'n.

The "Hip Hop on Rock Stations" debate is legitimate to a point.

Most people don't know that the guitar work on the Beasties' "Licensed To Ill" record was actually done by Kerry King of Slayer. Which gave it instant cred in the underground Rock/Metal world. In fact...Beastie Boys were originally a hardcore band.

As far as Cypress Hill (whom I played while at WBCN and never at any other Rock station), and Beasties and Everlast, and Beck...I never understood playing any of them on a Rock station. But then again...Rock stations have been so myopic in their viewpoint, they never considered that there's a whole generation of listeners influenced by Beastie Boys, Public Enemy (who did the first real crossover Rap Rock original called "I'm The Man") and Run DMC. So, I'm wrong. We have only to look at what's selling to realize, it isn't Rock. Radio, when executed correctly, is reflective of the audience's preferences. Based on perceptuals all over America...Beasties, Cypress Hill, Beck, Everlast, and Linkin Park (a band I still contend are a boy band) all test in as being within the acceptance of Rock radio's target audience.

The Cypress Hills and Beastie Boys are descended from Sly Stone and James Brown. Legitimate Rock with a funk flavor. It's not like they're Jay Z or EPMD.

I may be wrong. But unless 1 guy all over America likes to hear them on Rock radio, some Rap works.

So you admit that you don't know what KISS is playing, but you rip them apart for playing "heavy metal" (when in reality they were/are playing HITS). How can you say anything about ANY station you don't listen to?? Whatever credibility you had is gone, by your own admission.

Hmmm, but why did he add "Brass Monkey" to the playlist too when it wasn't really a bona-fide hit, and never did end up charting in the Top 40 at all.

And I agree, remember how CHR was back in the early 90's.

There's a Mobile, AL station, WBLX (former Boston WBOT dj Chris Holiday works there)..it's an Urban station that was playing Phil Collins's "In The Air Tonight" at 4:30 in the morning...when emailing the PD to ask if it was a mistake, he replied:
That's one of our overnight specials that kinda flow with the mood of "the night."

 Wow you guys have my head spinning. I have been listening to Boston radio from as far back as Dale Dorman on RKO. I tend to enjoy a freeform format. Maybe it's all the kinds of music I like, (Jazz, Big Bands, 50's R&B & rock..etc..) But I tend to get annoyed with listening to a set format. If I hear a song that seems out of place on a station, I love it. Mixes things up. Maybe it doesn't sell advertising but then again that is why I listen to alot of stations at the low end of the FM dial or the Underground Garage.
I also play a very loose freeform format on the show I do at the low end of the FM dial. Some people like it.

Now I might agree with you more if the music outside the formats were just more original, however it isn't. They simply just play what everyone else is already playing instead.
