Songs that sound better pitched up

I'm not saying to never do it...but I don't usually change the pitch of the song...I don't want my station to be the odd ball if a listener is used to hearing a song a certain way. I want the station to be more "official" than that.

I seriously doubt people would make a decision to listen to a station based on whether or not they pitch songs - in some markets, the CHR that pitches songs is winning in ratings, in some markets the CHR that pitches songs is losing in ratings - I really don't see a pattern to it

I do think it helps Hot ACs which are competing against CHRs, though

I honestly don't think most radio listeners even notice. Only us geeks do.

You're right. As with alot of the things we bust our butt over...it's only for the rest of us radio nerds when you look at the big picture.

But you know, overall when a programmer goes the extra mile with every fragment of a station, I think it gives the station a better sound that the regular person would appreciate a bit more. (not sure those are the words I'm looking for)

Not sure about average people not noticing. I remember when I was still a kid listening to Kiss FM hearing songs that I liked, then going to the store to buy it and being disappointed because the actual product was slower. I remember when I got Marc Anthony's "I need to know" and found out it was slower.

But then again, I was a geeky kid.

Chr's that pitch music sound more exciting & refreshing to me. We have a urban lean rhythmic that pitches even more than our local top 40 - 3 bpm's higher (So the Crookers remix of "Day'n'night" by Kid Cudi at 130 bpm would actually play at 133 bpm instead)! Not sure how pitching would affect things if a bunch of songs similar to "Green light" by John Legend suddenly started materializing on top 40 radio, though... I believe "green light" is 155 bpm at normal speed.

If everybody pitches, nobody sounds exciting. Or everybody does, I don't know. To me it seems like an upward/downward spiral. ;D

There is one CHR in Holland (the big ones are nationwide, we're a small country!) that pitches all the songs by 2%. I have had regular people and friends with untrained ears remark how certain songs sound like the smurfs. That's not a good thing imho.

Then again, take a look at the charts. There's so much turbopop nowadays. Do we need any more excitement? The music is already jampacked with trance-synths, whirlwind basses and awesome huge beats. I see no need for pitching to get more exciting.

Wow - I guess I'm in the minority here, but there are songs that I didn't like at first until I heard them sped up on Star 94 (or on Kiss 95.1 back when I lived in NC) - I guess the latest one is Never Gonna Leave This Bed by Maroon 5 (IMO sounds much better pitched - crisper sound, faster paced, etc.) - same with Parachute/Something To Believe In

Bringing up an old thread here,
Fun - We Are Young is one that comes to mind right away. Also Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone and the Maroon5 track mentioned in the previous post which I haven't heard in a while.

My opinion is probably not popular but I think CHR sounds better pitched up. Some songs it sounds better than others, but most recently Maroon 5's "Daylight" is hard for me to listen to at normal speed but sounds great pitched. That's just my opinion though.

I think it also has to do with the station's processing, I think I would have a hard time listening to KBKS if they didn't pitch.
