Songs you associate with jocks

Probably a silly post here, but I can tell you that, from here on out, I'll always think of Ron Chapman when I hear "Turn Turn Turn" or "Leader of the Band." Kinda like some songs that transport your mind back to where you were when you first heard it, or where you lived, what you were doing, who you were with, etc. I always think of Mike Selden when "Rock the Boat" comes on...that's what Chapman played as a tribute to Selden when Selden died back in 1997, because of the line near the end, "Rock on with your bad self" (part of a signature line that Mike used to say on the air.) "Best of My Love" (The Emotions) reminds me of Cat Simon. Other associations are tied in with listening to old airchecks over and over, hearing whoever do a memorable intro to whatever song. Just me, or does anyone else go through this too???

Certainly do. Still also visualize Simon when I hear "Year of the Cat."

There's a song that I also associate with Mike Selden.

A recording artist named Scott English was the original person to come out with the song, "Brandy."

Within a year, Barry Manilow changed the title and lyrics to "Mandy," and released the same song.

Mike Selden played the two of them, and felt that the original "Brandy" by Scott English was better. I felt so, too.

The original "Brandy" by Scott English never gets any airplay, but whenever I hear "Mandy" by Barry Manilow, I always think about this and remember Selden.

Randy Robins (one "b") went to work initially for Ariola Records, then longtime rep for Capitol in Denver and Atlanta.

Selden - Summer Rain

Selden used to always love to play around with songs. One I recall was his playing Johnny Rivers "Summer Rain" and at the point where the lyric says "..and everybody kept on playing Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band", he would insert the Beatles actually DOING the Sgt.Pepper line.

Another memorable Selden line coming out of "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Wanna Be Right." In his own style Mike changed it to, "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Wanna Get Caught."

Re: Selden - Summer Rain

There are so many things that I assoicate Michael Seldon-- the Chicago Song.. "If you Leave Me Now" when he would repeat the final "OOOH MAMA"... the only way he could.. and of course when he would deliver the calls for 103.7... K V I EVERYLOVIN L...

His growl.. if you will.. was something that some of us tried to copy-- and maybe even some have succeeded--but he was the original.. and he is missed! Along with Paxton Mills and others--

Just a thought

The thing about Selden was that he was unique in many ways, often approaching and occasionally ever so gently crossing the line of blue humor, at a time when that was not as accepted as it is today, but he knew the line and usually was not blatant, but rather relied upon much double entendre'.
He also borrowed from others act. Jimmy Rabbitt was one, Cuzzin' Linnie and Randy Robins were others. His cadence was often much like Rabbitt's and his shuck and jive were the Cuz and Big R's influence. A great talent lost much too soon.

Mike and I had two stations in common--one at which we were there at the same time, the other at which I followed him by a few months. We also had some first year college classes together. It was obvious early on that Mike would make it to great heights and make some notable achievements in the business. Always a rebel--but innovative and brimming with talent. Yes, he left us much too soon but the radio business in Dallas and elsewhere is much richer after his short stay.

So true on the last line. He told me differently. Oh well we got two different versions. Cest la vie'

Way late and way out of market but here goes:

As is typical with (don't say it) 'oldies' stations, WBIG in Washington would do Memorial Day top 500. Jeff Gold ('Goldy') doing evenings would 'campaign' for a particular song for the top 500. Don't recall the year, but when he endorsed Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Get Down,' a moderate hit from the early 70's, the song finished in the top 10 in the balloting.
