Songs you hated playing on the air?

Debby Boone? Morris Albert? Capt. & Tennille? Eric Carmen? What from your era really DIDN'T make your day (or night) shift?

I would have loved to play those cheesey 70s songs but I started in radio in the 80s. I least liked playing Richard Marx power ballads. That was just my taste, I could appreciate that he was popular at the time. I didn't like the whole genre. Other songs I didn't care for include Cheap Trick-The Flame and Bad English-When I See You Smile.

The worst Country song ever... Drinkin' And Drivin' by Johnny Paycheck. We all know how that ended for him. The stupidest song ever recorded.

Just what we need. more drunks on the road.

Guns and Roses November Rain comes to mind. Hated that song most of the time, was way to long. We played the long version at night on WIQQ in Greenville, Mississippi. Only thing it was good for was a Bathroom break, or when a female fan stopped by the Studio ;D

Another song was Right Said Fred, I'm Too Sexy.. Cute at first, grew old real fast..

On the Flip Side, I really enjoyed playing King Missile - Detachable Penis on The Edge. Enjoyed playing it so much I made the mistake of playing it at 4am when it wasn't scheduled. At the next station meeting John Clay let everyone know about the unauthorized song played @ 4am ::) Don't think he ever slept.....

Scorpions - Wind of Change

For starters, it has that whistling part. Any song that has a whistle in it is suspect in my book. Then there's the fact that it was a power ballad from a band that I never thought would stoop to doing a ballad - let alone a power ballad - let alone a power ballad about world peace. Sure, a lot of hair bands did power ballads back then, but Scorpions were never a hair band, in part because their hair was already receding at that point.

It didn't help that we played it to death.

Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca". At just barely 2 minutes, not a good bathroom break song. And just barely time to re-load the next cd. Yes, this was before we had pc based audio.

ALL of the 2.5 minute timed songs we played out of the :55 break into CNN News at the top of the hour on WRZQ. Talk about BURN!

I once took matters into my own hands and 'lost' a station's copy of this. Literally, MADD mothers would call and tell us jocks about dead accident victims. Message received, loud and clear.

Other than that, still in the CW vein, it's Porter Waggoner's Pastor's Absent on Vacation and Red Sovine's Giddy Up Go. Meri Wilson's Telephone Man still gives me nightmares over on the top 40 side. Morris Albert's Feelings runner up.

Christmas songs. Before songs were put on computers, jocks had to write down who wrote the songs, and if they were licensed to ASCAP or BMI because they weren't in normal rotation. At a country station, I kept getting requests for, "Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer". At another station, it was Boney M's, "Mary"s Boy Child". I couldn't even listen to music on the way home after work during the Christmas season.

..."Dixie on My Mind" by Hank Williams, Jr. If the guy's gonna complain about being stuck up North, the least he could do is sell that bloody ranch in Montana he was living on at the time!...
