Sonics on KTTH

I read this article too. It goes on about how the team is likely to move, they're not expected to do very well, Calabro isn't doing radio broadcasts, the games are on a station with program a lot of people would consider obnoxious....and then this gem of wisdom from Pridemore:

"It's a challenge, but it's an exciting challenge," said Entercom's Dave Pridemore, who is general manager of both KTTH and KIRO-AM. "We're glad to have the opportunity to add to our local programming, and we think it's a great product."

That to me is why KIRO has lost its heritage image and continues to lose with its programming and sucky ratings. Managers there are clueless, and don't do anything based on reality. Instead their main strategy is misguided optimism.

Pridemore is doing a good job of putting a positive spin on a tough situation. So I don't have a beef with him there...but to say that KTTH has a comparable signal to the 50KW of KJR is nonsense. KJR doesn't have the mutha signal it used to have - even with the upgrade to 50K, but KTTH's 5K at nite is little more than a local signal.

And since many of the games occur at night - it's difficult to see how this is a win-win for anyone. If a fan wants to listen online, he's much more likely to watch on TV. It's the in-car that counts and KTTH doesn't ring with much 'truth' when discussing their in-car reach at night.

No

The Sonics on KTTH sucks. The lame pre-game show started at 6:30. I left MSFT at 5:10 and arrived at the Key at 6:40. At least I had KJR to listen to for pre-game coverage. On the drive home to Sammamish, I pretty much lost the lame post-game show on the I-90 hill down in to the Issaquah valley. Once I got on the plateau, I tried KTTH again and got to hear KTTH plus another station at the same time on 770. Again, at least there is KJR for the post-game. What were the Sonics thinking? I guess Howard wasn't thinking when he signed KTTH or signed the deal to sell to Clayton. I hope the Oklahoma City Sonics will stream their broadcasts online next year.

I liked some things about the broadcast tonight and didn't like some others. As an avid fan of AM night listening I've been disapointed in the fare that KIRO and KTTH have brought to the table. The decision to put a trucking show based out of Texas on KIRO for late nights is just plain dumb. As for the Sonics on KTTH it might as well be like Triple A baseball on 850 in Tacoma, except that KHHO is at least a Fox sports affiliate.

How KTTH brands themselves around the product is the question. I doubt Rush will cut a promo anytime soon. Will KTTH become the Sonics station? I think what they've done has handed Clear Channel an opportunity to spend hours of there programming on a hot issue, the future of Sonics basketball, that KTTH won't fully embrace. They'll just run the broadcast as a "flavor" to there overall schedule over at 770.

The guys on the floor calling the game showed me something however. Not bad for a debut. Unfortunatly, as has been mentioned here, KTTH doesn't have the best signal. It doesn't suck but it ain't the big four (KVI, KOMO, KIRO, KJR). I'd rather hear the Sonics on KIRO and feel that 12-15 starts in drivetime is do-able, especially when it has to be a one year deal. It's better than the the trucking guys.

I agree that something is a little off at Entercom/Seattle. They want a playoff/championship caliber team for the spring book. The Sonics are looking for a means to survive right now. I don't feel that this media partnership, from the Sonics perspective, is optimal. From Entercom's view I sense they're missing a potential opportunity. Instead they've set themselves up to save face. The Entercom GM is comfortable with that I guess.

If you're going to make assertions about something that "sucks," you should back up your claim with facts and information as to why it "sucks."

Instead we are all blessed with learning how your commuting habits.

I guess some people need things to be written out in bullet points rather than a paragraph.

The Sonics on KTTH sucks because:

1) Pre-game didn't start until 6:30.
2) Post-game could hardly be heard over the other station that has the same 770 signal

I didn't hear Locke call the game because I was at the game. I like Locks, so maybe listening to him call the game would be the good part of the broadcast. Well, if you could hear him.

I know what you said, but why do you call the coverage "lame?" And if the pre-game coverage was lame, why did you tune into the post-game coverage?

I'm not trying to defend KTTH, but there are a lot of accusations here and not a lot of reasons as to why.

Last night was the first night I listened to any Sonics coverage on KTTH, so I wanted to listen to both pre and post game coverage. Since I was at the game, I didn't get to hear Locke. I'll listen to Friday's game to hear him.

I just really think the quality of the shows was lacking, and of course the KTTH coverage was pretty bad as I documented.

I am just surprised the Entercom can do such a good job with the Seahawks, but then do a fairly poor job with the Sonics. If I were Clayton, I would do whatever I could to get the Sonics on KIRO. I bet the right wingers would appreciate it as much as the Sonics fans. Then the right wingers could then listen to O'Reily and the Sonics fans could actually hear the game clearly, even in North Bend.
